from China Business NOW

Hi everyone. I’m Stephanie LI. Coming up on today’s program.重点提要 -Chinese regulator issues first antitrust fines in 2022, signals sustained campaign to ensure market order;-Central China’s Henan Province reported 64 local COVID cases yesterday. Here’s what you need to know about China in the past 24 hours The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), China's top market regulator, on Wednesday fined a number of companies, including tech giant Tencent, e-commerce giant Alibaba and video sharing platform Bilibili, for violating the anti-monopoly law, in a fresh sign of China's continued efforts to crack down on illegal activities and ensure market order. The SAMR unveiled 13 cases of violation and slapped a fine of 500,000 yuan per case, with Tencent being fined for a total of 4.5 million yuan for involving in 9 of the cases. The fines came amid China's new stricter regulations targeting monopolistic practices in domestic online platforms. In April 2021, China imposed a record penalty of 18.23 billion yuan on Alibaba after determining that the company had abused its market position over the course of several years. With the amended Anti-Monopoly Law expected to come into force, and China’s national anti-monopoly bureau inaugurated last year, experts predict that this year's antitrust campaign will become even more stringent compared with last year. Chinese technology stocks sank on Wednesday, pushing the broader Hong Kong market towards its worst start to a year in 17 years, as concerns over Tencent cutting its stakes in a host of companies grew amid Beijing’s sweeping overhaul.Tencent plunged 4.3 percent after completing the sale of a 2.6 percent stake in Singapore-based technology group Sea Limited for $3 billion on Tuesday, raising cash for “other investments and social initiatives.”The stake disposals fanned speculation Tencent will take similar actions breaking up its holdings in other tech firms to circumvent more regulatory probes.Meituan, which is 19 percent owned by Tencent, tumbled 11 percent, while Kuaishou Technology, in which Tencent has a 21 percent stake, slumped 7.5 percent and Bilibili, in which the Chinese giant has a 14 percent interest, also sild 11 percent. Mainland China reported 132 domestic cases on Wednesday, with 64 in Henan province, and 63 in Xi’an city of Shannxi.  Henan has stepped up efforts to epidemic control, as all cross-provincial travel was paused on Wednesday, while several epidemic-hit cities have sealed off key regions and partially suspended schools and public venues.1月5日,内地新增本土病例132例(河南64例,其中许昌市50例、郑州市5例、洛阳市4例、周口市3例、商丘市1例、固始县1例;陕西63例,均在西安市;浙江5例,均在宁波市)。 Next on industry and company news产经消息及公司新闻India on Wednesday said it had asked the local unit of Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi to pay 6.53 billion rupees (560 million yuan) in import taxes after an investigation found that the company had evaded some duties. Xiaomi responded that the tax issue was caused by the disagreement on the methodology to determine the price for imported goods, adding that the statement from the Indian authorities is not the final decision. Media reported that Chinese short video platform Kuaishou is axing up to 30 percent of its staffs in departments including e-commerce, algorithm, internalisation, and gaming. 30%。US chipmaker Intel's autonomous driving unit Mobileye plans to work with Zeekr, which is backed by Geely Holding, to launch in China what the companies claim will be the world's first mostly self-driving car in 2024. Initial public offerings in the Chinese mainland could increase to a record level this year thanks to the full implementation of registration-based listings, a report by PwC shows.
