Between 2008 and 2012 the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, now referred to as CERN, commenced and completed the creation of the Large Hadron Collider. The world’s most powerful particle accelerator, its purpose was to advance our understanding of fundamental physics. The Collider was able to accelerate two counterrotating beams of heavy ions or protons at speeds close to the speed of light, with the goal of recreating conditions believed to have occurred in the first moments of when the universe came into existence.
