It's finally here the Irish are coming in between the hedges Saturday night Bear is gonna be in town for game day your thoughts initially when we look at this matchup Well a lot of excitement here Stephen bear just really kind of culmination of what Kirby's built up here ever since that big We're notar dame out there in the South Bend a few years ago And it certainly draws a lot of attention the fact that you're bringing game day in here And it's gonna be a big night game and crowds all jacked up and you just don't get that many Big games anymore. It looks like they're starting to schedule more around the country But certainly this has got all the elements of even though people are talking about George's decided favor Notre Dame's got some players and got a good coach and a you know They'll challenge this team because Georgia really hasn't been challenged at this point So they're gonna get a chance to see how they can play against a good team you hit on something That I'm just curious to get your opinion on it if you were a head coach Right now in 2019 and you mentioned like the but the we don't get too many of these big top 10 early season type non-conference games College football playoff era if you were a head coach Would you want one of these early season games or would you try and schedule like the best path to a potential undefeated regular season? Yeah, I think you got to then today society here bear just because of evidence my last year You only had one undefeated team Clemson and at the end of the year So you're gonna get a couple in there with maybe one loss So I think strength is scheduled certainly I don't study this like you and Steve do But it's certainly gonna help you to have a quality win particularly in Georgia's case where the East is not very good right now And you know they got to cross over game with Auburn which should be pretty difficult in A&M But you just can't count on your the other teams in SEC being up there in the upper echelon right now I mean SEC a little bit top heavy so I think having a game like this is gonna help us next year We played Virginia. We got Clemson the next couple years So I think every year if you can play one of these teams It doesn't hurt you to the end of the world if you do lose But if you can get a win over them that really carries a lot of weight towards the end of the year What Clemson next couple is you might you might got Clemson coming the January 14th and we're only coming to 2020 Hey, that's true.
I mean that could be that could be something you got to go I'm not gonna go out and lay them and say we're gonna schedule it looks like they're gonna be in there for sure Unless you know something happens drastically to him, but it's something we talk about every week and I enjoy listening You guys talk about it. It's a it's a big story now With you know trying to figure out who the 14s are gonna be and already it's down to about seven or eight I agree with you coach and when you look at this on the field, you know, you know I always respect what you say our text all week every week, you know There was there was word coming out of Georgia's camp fall camp, you know saying hey We might have a secondary this year when you look at this matchup, you know Notre Dame strike this office They lost a lot to the on the defensive side in the draft and NFL talent that they had But when you look at this game breaking it down on the field where where's you know, we know Georgia's 14-point favor Where and why do you think they are where's the advantage the biggest? Well, you start out playing at home and then you the fact that you got a veteran quarterback That's been very efficient takes care of the balls got a high ratio of touchdowns of interceptions And you got a big strong offensive line So you're gonna keep the ball away from Notre Dame for the most part plus We got a really good kicking game. I got an outstanding place care grand a good punter and a good punt return team, too So that all adds into it But I think the difference in our team this year over last year as compared to 17 is we got a lot more athletes in the second areas You mentioned and with that we can play a lot of these sub packages that Kirby liked to play when he was in Alabama Where you just don't play one or two coverages and you can really mix up your pressures zone the blipses and things like that Because last year we were playing around our defense and we ended up having a great year But our defense was you know was a little bit suspect against the run But I think that was kind of the plan we were trying to keep people from throwing against us with dropping some people So we can be pretty aggressive with these defensive backs We got their athletic and JRE and an account in the back end or really to get safeties on top of that All right, we'll be looking for that for sure on the offensive side.
You believe Georgia's got the best old line in the SEC? Yeah, I mean, you know everybody talks about it cuz we're so big But they're very athletic and we got a right tackle right now Wilson's kind of as a bad ankle But I don't know if you'll be ready to go But we got a good replacement and that sauier kids can move out there or maze can move out from guard So we've got a very strong offensive line and Sam Pippen really recruits well So I think right now we've recruited around to what Kirby and coach Coley Won't you know powerball with these backs and we got some really good young receivers? We lost some guys, but these young receivers stepping it up too But again, we really haven't been challenged here. You can get an all-star team from that those first three games We played and they still have a hard time playing Perfect segway cuz I was gonna say they dominated the first two opponents overmatched.
How much do you think Kirby? Saved hasn't shown in game another name I mean they they could run probably have run six plays on offense in the first couple of games in one Every day gonna run a base defense in the first couple of days in one And just from you having been in that situation as well I got how much do you think we're gonna see from Georgia on Saturday night that we haven't seen at all this year? Well, certainly there's some things that they've saved, you know, maybe personnel groupings Or maybe some things with their pressure package, but but overall, you know, we're pretty basic on both sides of the ball I mean you can't invent a lot of different ways to handle ball to swift or to you know throw play action passes But defensively you can use some different groupings and pressures But the good thing about our team as an old coach here and I'm talking in those terms is in practice I got to see a very competitive situation every day You guys has the benefit compared to most people that aren't Listening I mean the people are listening to show you get to watch things practice and we're very very competitive go one versus one a lot So we're challenged a lot in practice and that really helps you prepare for the games And you get to run a lot more plays and practice too So I think we're gonna be a little bit more diverse But at the same time we're not gonna come out there and look like some kind of you know Trying a lot of different trick plays and gadgets stuff. I mean we're pretty basic football team But very physical and very very fast What about Notre Dame do you think Kirby would be most worried about like if he's going to this game is it something off?
Well, you know a lot of things that were you a team that went undefeated last year to the play also? No out of win they know how to play into up environment everybody talks about their record against top five teams But that's hard to be very good against top five teams with anybody I mean, you know, there's nobody's overwhelming look at Michigan their situation So I think the thing that it's always given us a little trouble and gave him trouble at Alabama is a mobile quarterback Because you can't play two man against them. You can't play man under and too deep because if he breaks a lot of scrimmage Book can really hurt you and so we got to mix up our coverages and this is a veteran quarterback that won the job from win-bush And I like the way he competes and they got some physical receivers that can get the ball on jump balls on the edge So we're gonna have to be get some people in his face and get them off the field Because if we could get ahead of him our defense is like piranhas when we're ahead I mean they can really get after you. I love a defense full piranhas coach love that Hey, if you're walking around Athens at all our friends I've been with seats are saying if you find one of these tickets for this game You get like 630 bucks, you know that is that all?

He said I got this bird that's flown in here from LA And I've got her a driver and I was wondering if she could get behind the bus and follow you follow us at the stadium And I said, yeah, that'll be okay Just let me okay. It was Switzerland I have Switzerland everything He said that's great because we had you know three buses and some state patrolmen and everything There's always a few cars that got in there too So so next morning I got up and I'm walking out to the bus and I'm looking around I see this big big black stretch limo I mean envision the biggest one you've ever seen and I'm thinking I'm thinking that some country singer is there for some kind of Event, you know, they're in Oklahoma. I said man, that's the biggest limo I've ever seen so I get on the bus and everything And so Jamil gets on I said, hey, you gonna get her to jump in he said, yes, I said, what kind of car she's in he said She's in a stretch I said come on and he said, yeah, so I said, hey, just tell her to get in behind so here we drive over there Three buses a few cars in this big black stretch limo with guns ablaze and I mean we got to all these people You know with the sirens on we get to the stadium and they're all set up, you know for parking for the three buses But they're not ready for some stretch, you know, particularly if it's an Oklahoma guy, you know And so Switzer jumps out of there and sees it It's it's Jamil's girlfriend He starts arguing with him and everything and they think that's what this groups with Switzer and everything they're trying to go Back and forth, but anyhow finally they let him park it But there's not many times you get a stretch limo in there with one of your players and then the other one was Later in the year we're playing Nebraska for the and whoever one went to the national championship And we ended up beating the Nebraska and going and beating Penn State But anyhow, we had an open day today but that week and so Switzer's telling our players look you guys got really bare down now And can stay around here and we don't want any trouble Just keep focusing we'll come back Monday and get going and and so anyhow ABC had set up the interview Steve Taylor their quarterback and Jamil at halftime of the game that they had that week I don't know which game it was but it's on a Saturday So they go in first and they you know, I'm gonna watch it because I really want to see what's going on and see what Steve Taylor has To say so they go into Lincoln, Nebraska and there's Steve Taylor where there's Nebraska football shirt on and he's just doing a great job He said look we had a short workout today and we're really focused on OU You got to remember our team's off.
We're not practicing or anything So I'm trying to figure out where they're gonna interview Jamil, you know And so then it comes on and said here we are from the Los Angeles Coliseum And we got OU's quarterback Jamil Holloway right here and about two seconds later about phone ring What's going on? After waiting on him flown out there to watch a couple of his buddies play for USC and he's out there talking about I had to come out here Back my boys, you know against UCLA Just showed you how people still got around back in the 80s coach Hey, he had some he had he moved around me was a great boarder But still until this year when the Lawrence when the National Championship is the last kind of winning one and and you know It was he was just kind of we had some good good discipline and everything But sometimes these kids you know, you just you can't figure out what they're gonna do and I mean That's got leaves goes out to LA but he's back on Sunday Don't ask how right don't ask how right that's right. No, I'd remember he was my favorite player growing up That's my first inkling to the college football was watching your offense and the sooner's back in the day. So that's great He can ride into side.
