Ch. 21.2, The Passover at Jerusalem

A man from Damascus asks Jesus how anyone can be sure He is sent by God, and sure of a place in the Kingdom. Jesus says a good father does not keep his children guessing about his love—and neither does the Father in Heaven. If you receive God as Father, you are His son. The evidence of birth from the Spirit is sincere love of your neighbor.That night Nicodemus, a wealthy elder of the Sanhedrin, meets Jesus in secret at Flavius’s house. Jesus tells him no one enters the Kingdom unless they are born from above, born of the Spirit. Nicodemus leaves impressed and confused. Later he finds the courage to help claim Jesus’ body.In Bethany, Thomas asks what rules the people should live by. Jesus says the Kingdom is first a family: love the Father, love your brother. He warns the Apostles not to mix a spiritual kingdom with slavery, poverty, and politics.
