Ch.24 p.213-215 The Memoirs of President Joseph Smith lll

The subheadings are :- Visit to General A.W. Doniphan, Labours in Iowa, and The Loss of a Favourite Child. The striking theme of this episode is the sorrow and brokenheartedness of Joseph Smith lll of an accident that occurred in the school playground which brought about the death of his 6yr old daughter Bertha Azuba in 1884. Even at the end of his life, this child evoked powerful emotion. Joseph Smith lll said he felt somewhat hurt for all the work he was doing gospel wise and yet he lost his daughter, whilst overcome with sadness he had a vision of her being cared for and happy. Thia episode includes a poem/hymn written by Joseph Smith lll in her memory.
