Ch 9 cont. P.65-67 The Memoirs of President Joseph Smith lll
from Green Eyes Yolanda · host Yolanda Tranquille Geer
The sub headings of this episode are :Justice of the peace and Hostilities. Joseph Smith lll speaks of being reelected several times as Justice of the peace of the Nauvoo Township 1858 and 1862 and that he began preaching at the President of the Reorganised Church in 1860. There was prejudice against him religiously towards him elections by leaders amongst the Methodists and Presbyterians who didnt want him elected but due to being a kind and fair lawyer, the French, Germans and Austrians of Nauvoo who upon arrival needed support legally, voted for him over the years. There was competition at one time between who would be mayor, Joseph Smith lll being nominated but the other nomination offered alcoholic drinks to which Joseph Smith lll responded that the office chooses the man and not the man the office and he would not use alcohol as persuasion. Joseph Smith lll speaks of his mother in law Mrs Griswold and that she had named him her favourite son in law and his reasoning why. This particular chapter holds the story of Joseph Smith lll being handed an unsigned letter to stop him carrying out even such activities of singing church songs... there were many things mentioned in the letter but Joseph Smith lll kept his cool and asked for it to be signed. Noone would sign it so he ignored and and carried on. This amused me.
