Chapter 8 p.50-56 The Memoirs of Joseph Smith lll
from Green Eyes Yolanda · host Yolanda Tranquille Geer
This episode brought tears to my eyes and choked me up a few times. Joseph Smith lll speaks of his first loves and of his proposal to Miss Emmeline Griswold whom he met in a candy store and who when he was riding in a buggy with his brother, saw her in the road and declared to his brother that he would marry her. He describes proposing and his first kiss with her being upon her acceptance of his proposal and the second kiss following the marriage vows. Personally I note from this episode Emmeline's experience that the female race experiences and that is unwanted attention from men folk, she had accepted to marry Joseph Smith lll but had gone to stay with her brother in law after the passing of her sister and found herself receiving attention from men that were determined, and who were also obnoxious to her for way of their demeanor and language. I can imagine that she was glad to be reunited with Joseph Smith lll as he utterly respected women and declared this in his writings that he had had a very lovable relationship with his mum Emma Smith and he naturally honoured women and therefore Emmeline as well. She sent message for him to collect her sooner so she could get away. They set up home, living between places such as Emmelines mother and Joseph's mother's until their homestead was furnished. The sadness comes when Joseph Smith lll chooses to join with The Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and his wife's family and neighbours begin to poison his wife's mind against him but that was resolved and children are born to Joseph and Emmeline which some do not make it and Emmeline's health also declines. It is a tear jerking episode. It is after the death of one child that Joseph joins with the Reorganisation and upon the death of the last child Emmeline asked David, Joseph Smith lll's brother, to baptise her. I share some of my own thoughts and i do not apologise for becoming emotional putting myself into the situation and pondering the sadness but also the blessing of comfort that eventually came.
