An evil shadow from the past makes its presence known, but Raphael is close by.  Adam’s fame attracts a Greek merchant and impresario, Theron Simonides, accompanied by two extraordinary warriors from the steppes, Red Scythians of the Massagentae tribe to Adam’s clinic. Theron recites a compelling tale of blood and treachery, and begs Adam to help the Scythian Queen, Axia Panoplias, "She who is Worthy of Armour" who is gravely ill. Adam hastens to her chambers, and encounters an extraordinary scene, with the Scythian Queen on the edge of death.
