Character Education - Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient Salvatore A. Giunta (Afghanistan)

Specialist Giunta, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for risking his life above and beyond the call of duty while in Afghanistan.Interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program, a free program that helps students build character and promotes responsible citizenship. The Medal of Honor is awarded for “gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of one’s life, above and beyond the call of duty.” Those awarded it drew upon provide their deepest convictions and values in the most challenging of circumstances. Their examples of courage and sacrifice can inspire us as we face our own challenges.Specialist Giunta and his team had been navigating through harsh terrain when they were ambushed. While under heavy enemy fire, Specialist Giunta sprinted towards cover and engaged the enemy, then exposed himself to enemy fire to administer medical aid to his squad leader. Realizing that a fellow soldier had become separated from the element, Specialist Giunta then advanced forward on his own initiative and observed two insurgents carrying the soldier away. He immediately engaged the enemy and was able to rescue and provide medical aid to the wounded soldier.
