Charlie Cullen: The Killer Nurse Behind The Good Nurse

For sixteen years, Charles Cullen worked as a nurse in hospitals and medical centers across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was trusted with medications, IV lines, and the lives of vulnerable patients. That trust made him deadly. Cullen quietly poisoned patients with medications including digoxin and insulin, often making their deaths appear to be the result of their existing illnesses. He moved from hospital to hospital, sometimes leaving under suspicious circumstances, yet continued finding new nursing jobs and new patients. By the time he arrived at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey, coworkers had begun noticing disturbing patterns. Nurse Amy Loughren became increasingly suspicious of Cullen and ultimately worked with investigators, helping police gather the evidence they needed to confront her friend and colleague. Her role in exposing Cullen later became central to the book and Netflix film The Good Nurse. Cullen was arrested in December 2003. What followed was staggering. He confessed to killing as many as 40 patients during his nursing career. Twenty-nine murders were ultimately confirmed through his guilty pleas and convictions, along with several attempted murders. Investigators and journalists have long suspected that the true number of victims could be significantly higher, but estimates reaching into the hundreds have never been definitively proven. In New Jersey, Cullen received 11 consecutive life sentences for murdering 22 patients and attempting to kill three others. Additional convictions in Pennsylvania brought his confirmed murder total to 29 and ensured that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. But Cullen’s case raised another disturbing question: How did a nurse suspected of harming patients continue moving from one hospital to another for sixteen years?
