CHARULATA (1964)

Franz and Paul find their domestic bliss under pressure while talking about the 1964 Bengali chamber drama CHARULATA!  Directed by Satyajit Ray, and starring the magnificent Madhabi Mukherjee as the lonesome longing Charu, whose life within household walls is turned inside out with the arrival of her cousin-in-law Amal.  Set in 1870s Kolkata, Ray continues to explore the rhythms of life — cultural progress, aesthetic and intellectual engagement, class, colonial governance, as well as focusing on a woman's consciousness.
