Happy happy Thursday everyone. I hope everyone's having a great day. Welcome to the daily with so Stein on anchor today It's all about chasing clarity. I'm going to do a show today I'm going to try to do another one tomorrow possibly Monday and Tuesday of next week depends on the time and After that, I will not be on after Tuesday Because I'm going to be working on my novel.
I am going to be off social media I'm doing this for the Lenten season. That's just my own thing that I'm doing and I will be back until the end of April After because it starts in March at the end like the April probably the last week of April or early May I'll be having new shows and hopefully bringing on other authors editors and have more shows to come and make it about the daily with So Stein not every you know occasionally with so Stein kind of joked about that the other day, but it's not intentional I have children, you know, I have a hectic schedule. I need to learn about balance this year, you know trying to Create that balance where I'm also, you know doing the podcast. I'm working I'm you know, my children of course come first my husband my children and then balance, you know, being a writer an author of Podcast there and everything else that comes between so and they've had a lot of activities this year as a matter of fact tomorrow My daughter will have her first competition this weekend, so we're taking off to South Carolina So it's crazy.
We and it's amazing, but crazy hectic schedule and she has a rehearsal today my mother my wonderful mother-in-law My mom called her mom. She's she's been amazing and taking our son to rehearsal So shout out to her Kathy Stein. Thank you for always being there for us And she's been taking my son back and forth my husband was getting out late and I don't drive and that's the story for another day And and so it's been kind of hectic, you know in that but she's been wonderful to help us and like I said I'm rambling on we've had a lot of stuff going on so my apologies But I'm so happy to be back here for the daily with still Stein on anchor And I appreciate all you guys do and now it's all about chasing clarity. So I'm gonna start on that I'm gonna read chapter four and I hope if you have not read this book I hope you'll take the time to do that I shared a lot of you know my own experience and personal stuff in regards to the book and I shared a lot You know of what I really don't discuss as much in my own personal aspect of it How how where it started to where it became for me?
You know after doing me a story and then going through my own personal loss recent loss Which yesterday was two years since my best friend and sister passed away and it was a rough day You know everyone has their rough days and this is why I didn't do anything yesterday other than I posted Something for her and then I was pretty much off and I just kind of took the time off to reflect Then I'm sure her family did too and it's you know It's just like I said, it's hard when you're dealing with that type of subject where it has to do with grief and any type of loss So but in any case, I'm gonna read chapter four. I hope you enjoyed this part of chasing clarity We'll see if I read all of it or just part of it And then I hope you'll check out chasing clarity today because today's show is just about that I will give some short announcements for the wrap up And then I hope to have another show for you tomorrow where I start hopefully go back to the book by Amy Peters the writer's devotional 365 writing prompts and all of that stuff that we can discuss hopefully and we can get back to that and then Hopefully you'll be able to tune in and listen to the show. So anyway, let's get started If you do hear some clicky noises I am on the phone recording this and I place that where the screen fades out so the battery life can be a little more So hopefully if you notice that I apologize for all that movement that's going on So now I'm gonna start with chapter four and this is from my novel from my YA chasing clarity a novel by me so this time Chapter four I never thought I would be as nervous as I am now my legs tremble as I walk Up to the front of the biggest reader could up to the big cathedral. Sorry.
There are familiar faces all through the crowd Then I see the dances it had been so hard. It has been so hard to make eye contact with them because I knew the moment I stood back at them. I would fall apart all I could think about at this time was everything Leo and I were supposed to be doing right now. We'd already planned our future together He was attending the University of Michigan here in Ann Arbor and I was taking dance.
We've both known what we wanted To do for a very long time He was going to study medicine and I was going to study in New York to study dance in New York and become a famous ballerina Then he would come to my opening night performances and eventually come to NYC with me. It was all so clear to us It was all all mapped out. I remembered how amazing it was to have not to have met Leonk dancing He joked about it once see me. I you love dancing and now you met a dancing.
It was meant to be my love. I smiled now In spite of the pain now This this part is you know emotional and I'm sorry I've made a few mistakes while reading it and this is Mia walking into the church after as we learned you know She hears that her beloved Leo her the love her only love that she's had known you know is gone and now she's walking into the cathedral She doesn't want to make contact with her his family She just she just wants to try to make it and now you know that line about I know you've met up dancing I always liked that name. I heard it I think clear names her husband's last name is dancing and I heard that name and I just loved it And I said oh Leo and then of course and my husband will laugh at this I'm a big fan of Leo DiCaprio So of course I named the guy Leo, you know, I just called him Leo I never really wanted to specific if it was Leonardo or not and I just started calling him Leo and then dancing was because I Really loved that name, but when we were doing the first draft or edits and a shout out to her because before I took it to Kim I had Michelle Austin witty And if I mispronounced her name Michelle, please forgive me She was the one who looked at it and said you know what? You know it's great It's great that you have that she's a dancer because you know you could add a line like you know You know the line you have there fits perfectly because she's a dancer and he's a dancy and we kind of worked around that So I have Michelle Austin witty to thank for that line And it's been revised a few times, but the overall message is the same You know you married a dancy and you're a dancer, you know kind of like that I don't know it's kind of cheesy, but I just thought I'd bring that and you know kind of name that you know Say that about that line.
So anyway, so I'll resume back to the chapter and then it says Where are we now? Oh Leo how I miss you I was it was supposed to be simple. It wasn't about us How I long just see his face. Why do I have to do this now?
I'm so confused I'm not sure what to do next or where to go goodness now. Everyone is quiet. The music has stopped I don't think I'm ready for this moment go on me and do it for Leo fine First I want to say how much I appreciate everyone being here as you know I've known Leo since we were kids and we've been together since middle school There's nothing I wouldn't have done for him, and I know he felt the same about me. However, I'm still having a hard time Understanding what's happening happening at this moment.
I'm sure you are all as well All of a sudden tightness teases my chest and I tried to breathe it away. Well, this is harder than I could have imagined Please bear with me. I began to hear my voice struggle. I needed help.
I will now recite a poem I wrote for today. I cleared my voice and then I began to count silently fighting my bottom lip from the nervousness I took a deep breath and then uttered towards do not cry for me when you feel alone I'm here with you do not cry for me when you think I am gone For I am in the air all around you do not cry for me when you get weak or I will be there to make you strong Please do not cry for me right where I am in the kingdom of God and I will always be there to shine a light for you Just know I love you all All I wanted to do is hide from everyone. How was I supposed to make this work? I felt lost nothing makes sense at this moment everyone began to cry my mind flashed back to the call to change me forever Mia, this is Matt Leo has been hurt.
No, no, no, this just can't be I wanted to escape. I feel trapped I don't want to say goodbye. Come on Mia called my mother slowly I took a deep breath fighting my lip and I felt myself get dizzy I'm not sure what happened next, but the next thing I knew I was outside. Sweetie.
Come on now. Mom. What happened? I looked around.
I'm not in the church anymore. I'm outside sitting in the grass by the parking lot. You passed out in the church I struggled to my feet. What?
No, this can't be I have to say goodbye. My mom puts a hand on my shoulder honey I promise you you will she was free, but you just said I passed out. I blurted she grabbed my hand Mia That was just a few minutes ago. No one has left the church yet.
I nodded taking time to process her response Okay, she has me a bottle of water Now, please drink this Mia. I took a small sip. Okay. I hand it the bottle back to her.
Please take me back to the church Are you sure? She frowned. Are you sure? Yes, I am sure mom.
I exclaimed Okay, Mia said my dad. We walk back. Okay, Mia said my dad We walk back in using the side entrance. The music was playing immediately.
I recognized the song It was one of Leo's favorite hymns. I tried to remain calm Breathe Mia then the bishops then the bishops spoke I want to thank you all for coming today So we can say our final goodbyes to a very wise and strong young man who had such a zest for life and was kind to everyone I first came across young Leo Danci when his mother enrolled him in our sundae religion class when he was only five years old I could tell he had a love for his faith then and I knew he was thriving very hard to keep with it as he got older His presence will be sorely missed memories of Leo build my mind I don't want to be at the church This morning where we spent so much time together while he was alive with one of the last places on earth I want to be I want it to be Once the bishop resides the last blessing we all walked out and prepared to gather at st. Catherine of sienna cemetery I can tell my mother and father concerned about me. So I decide to remain calm at least for the time being Just close your eyes and stay calm So that was chapter four of chasing clarity my book Um, I wanted to read this excerpt so I could let you all know about my books and talk more about where they came about as I shared Last time.

We're going to cover week 25 I'm going to go over the days of the week on this writers devotional Today, and then i'm going to do the wrap up and some announcement. So let's dive right in I am still author sylvia sine and welcome to the show Excuse me Writers on writing Asking a working writer what he thinks About critics is like asking a lamppost what it feels about dogs. This is a quote by christopher hempton christopher hempton is a british playwright and a screenwriter Perhaps best known for the play le laison's danger route based on the french episode tori episode tori novel He also wrote the screenplay for the popular movie version of the story starring john malkovich Glenn close michael piper and woman thermon which was dangerous laison's um happily Which is what it translates to happily for him since he seems Not to hold warm and fuzzy thoughts about critics the play and the movie were well received He has taken his lashing from critics However, he especially took a beating for his 2003 film imagining argentina starring antonio van deras and emma thompson highly flawed awkwardly executed poorly conceived Bidgety and incomplete ouch before some of the critics and what they said hampton can keep this data mind Because he recognizes that writing involves risk every time writers create and publish whether in the local newspaper or on movie screens Around the globe they are open to the judgment of others in this way writing that most Solid solitary of occupation becomes grammatically unsol- unsolitary You shouldn't take his critique critique As disheartening news hampton affirms that there is nothing he would rather do than write He says i'm aware of how rare it is for people to be able to do exactly what they want to do So i'm always grateful And we'll be right back with this was writers on writing and learning about christopher hampton and for the tuesday motivation we'll be right back And welcome back to the daily with sillstein here on anchor and here is we're cub this week We're covering the book by author again.
We're covering the book by author amy peters the writers devotional 365 Inspirational exercises ideas tips and motivations on writing now. We go to tuesday motivation Later writing is the only device for combining solitude with good company So here we go into Tuesday motivation. This is for week 25. It's all divided into the weeks different weeks You're ever stuck.
The quote is letter writing is the only device for combining solitude with good company This is by a quote by lord vibrant. You're ever stuck with an idea that won't germinate on the hate consider taking a break consider taking a break And writing a letter to one of your favorite writers the author is no longer alive That's okay. Write the letter as an exercise to limber up your mind before launching into other writing projects for the day many authors Love to receive fan mail and with the advent of the internet It is easier than ever to track down either their home or email address Many authors have their own website which lists contact information for snail mail or an email address for send your letter most publishers Will also for letters to their authors president barack obama also a best-selling author Pan the fan letter to life of pie novelist yan martell martell Celebrate the letter on his personal blog by connecting with authors You will continue to develop a foundation for your writing corresponding with other writers can help bridge the gap between the work you do on your own And your need as a writer to connect with others writing letters is also of course another act of writing because all of your writing counts so to do we Know so to do these letters as Ernest Ernest Hemingway said Writing letters is such a well way to keep from working and yet feel you've been you've done something That's pretty interesting And now we and we'll be right back with Wednesday. So that was by quote by Lord Byron Now we're moving on to the next segment to Wednesday writing class write a travelogue about a day trip to a nearby town So we're going to be right right back to cover Wednesday writing This is the daily with sylstein on anchor And we'll be right back And welcome back to the daily with sylstein here on anchor and now we're back with third-day editing A dash is a mark of separation stronger than a comma less formal than a colon and more relaxed than parentheses Strong this is from strong and white the elements of style Now the interesting part about this is that when I covered steven king on writing if you remember He didn't quote a lot of writing books, but one of the writing books he did mention was the elements of style by strunk and white So if you have not checked that book out, that's the book I recommend this week to check out strunk and white the elements of style Now we're going with thursday eddy am I crazy about dashes and use them in my writing all the time?
When I want to take particular point very clear I love them because they are visually appealing they really stand out on the page and are more engaging than Perimpic parentical remarks which can often take you off topic. So see what I mean So she did she kind of shows that here she puts our visually appealing marks it they really stand out on the stage she puts the The dashes and are more engaging than parentical remarks which can often take you off topic Okay dashes are an immediate way to say to the reader wake up I've got some important information you need to know without using an exclamation point Which looks juvenile the chicago manual style implies that the dash suggests decisiveness and I agree However, like all great techniques of writing it should not be overused dashes can be used no more than Once a chapter or once in an essay Sorry When do you use them they can be inserted into the middle of a sentence as a qualifying clause or at the end of a sentence when you have an abrupt change in a thought or an interruption in speech during dialogue I think you're an angel I mean an idiot But it makes it I mean it puts the dash in between an angel and idiot. So that was interesting. You're an angel It's I mean an idiot But anyway, in any case, we now this was Thursday editing and we'll be right back with Friday biography And welcome back to the daily with selstein on anchor now we have Friday biography And i'm going to read a quote by author john grisha the most difficult tasks Basing a writer is to find a voice in which to tell the story so let's leave him john grisha majored in accounting and Mississippi State University and later graduated with a law degree He went on to practice law for nearly a decade specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation In 1983 he was elected to the Mississippi house of representatives and served until 1990 As a lawyer grisha was exposed to the darkest parts of the criminal justice system He once overheard the testimony of a 12-year-old rape victim, which inspired him to write his own novel exploring what would have happened Here the girl's father had murdered for a salence He took the time to write every morning for several hours before heading off to work at three years later He was finished with his first novel a time to kill it was eventually bought by a small press following many other rejections and in 1988 Just 5,000 copies were printed when he sold the film rights to his next novel the firm in paramount pictures Two paramount pictures for 600,000 grisham suddenly became an overnight success The firm became the best selling novel of 1991 since then grisham has published a best selling novel every year So we have not checked out the books by john grisha I'm pleased to because of his of his law degree background He really covers in depth in depth all of the elements that are that you know are haunting Especially a time to kill that book and that that movie showed a very strong storyline and what happens with such a horrendous acting Committed and in the firm every every story that he tells tells it brings about an interesting Story and as he quoted the most difficult task facing the writers to find a voice in which to tell the story He really finds his voice in his novels And so I would highly recommend you check out john grisham and this was bright a biography on using the book by author author amy peters the writers devotional 365 inspiration or exercises ideas tips and motivations on writing and we'll be right back And now it's time for the wrap up here on the daily with sillstein on anchor for today.
I covered monday through friday on week 25 And I will leave saturday and sunday for the next time I do my show of the daily with sillstein on anchor But the books to read as I said is the elements of style by strunk and white Um, and then since we're going to be talking about vango look up complete letters of vango Of instant vango if you have a chance it's called complete letters of instant vango. I've instant vango So I hope you'll check those out and I really have enjoyed Being here today even though it's a short show as I said, I'm going to be taking a small hiatus During this month of march starting tomorrow up until maybe the day after easter I'll be back online, but it's a time for reflection for me trying to do a little something different We depend so much on other things we got to focus on ourselves sometimes and I want to do some Some more reflection and whether it's be prayer meditation and also take care of house house Stuff that needs to be done and hasn't been dealt with so there's so much stuff I have to get done kind of like an early spring cleaning And uh, I do appreciate if you guys that support the podcast and have gone in and logged in If you have not, I hope you'll check out the episodes and I hope everyone has a great great day Those are some of my announcements and also I will be coming back with my new novel news on my new novel battered mind I'll resume on chasing clarity, but for now I hope you will check out this podcast and the other podcast that are available through the daily with sillstein here on anchor And they're also available through spotify Google play iTunes um and any other social media that you might want to Uh, get them look look up the daily with sillstein on anchor, but for now I just wanted to say thank you and I will miss Doing my podcast and trying to be a part of it, but when I get back it'll be even better So I hope everyone has a good one. Have a great day and happy happy tuesday Thank you for joining me here today on the daily with sillstein on anchor.
