The five civilized tribes of American Indians in the South (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole) were forcibly removed by the U.S. Government to Oklahoma in the early 1800s. Major Ridge was a Cherokee leader, who ultimately was killed by his own tribesman for betrayal.
