A Cherokee Marine’s Courage on Iwo Jima: PFC Adam West Driver, born in 1917 in North Carolina, enlisted in 1944 as a skilled carpenter turned rifleman. Wounded on the first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima, he refused to retreat, fighting valiantly for weeks until his death on March 4, 1945. Honored with the Purple Heart and Combat Action Ribbon, his legacy lives on — his name now displayed at the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum in St. Louis, which is currently hosting an exhibit celebrating Native American service members.
