Miller, one of the most popular performers of the big band era, volunteered to join the Army and entertain the troops. The 38-year-old band leader gave up a salary of more than $15,000 a week to serve. Miller and his band entertained thousands of Allied troops over the next two years. During a flight from England to France on December 15, 1944, Miller’s plane disappeared over the English Channel. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star in 1945.
