Children and Discipline

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

Violence in Schools has once again come under the spotlight, following a leaked video of a teacher who is seen to slap a learner after she had a heated argument with the learner in class. The teacher and pupil were both suspended pending disciplinary hearings after the incident at the school in Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa. A subsequent video of the same teacher is recorded after the incident where the school learners are seen hugging the teacher at the school premises. So today we ask the question? Are teachers equipped enough to instil discipline to the leaners or is it the duty of the parents and society at home? We are joined for the 1st time this year to unpack all those by:1. Nomusa Cembi Media Officer South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU)2. Prof Kobus Maree Department of Educational Psychology University of Pretoria 3. Prof Felix Maringe Head of School of Education Wits University
