The Statler Brothers, 1955 - 2002, Staunton, Va., will be the featured artists this week on The Gospel Jubilee.Go to: https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/17762698/download.mp3The Statler Brothers (sometimes simply referred to The Statlers) were an American country music, Gospel, and vocal group.The quartet was formed in 1955 performing locally and, in 1964, they began singing backup for Johnny Cash, until 1972.Despite the name, only two members of the group (Don and Harold Reid) are actual brothers and none has the surname of Statler.The band, in fact, named themselves after a brand of facial tissue they had noticed in a hotel room (they joked that they could have turned out to be theKleenex Brothers).Most notable group members were: Don Reed, lead, Harold Reed, bass, Phil Balsley, baritone, and Lew Dewitt, Tenor.Jimmy Fortune, replaced Dewitt in 1983 after Dewitt's ill health.  Dewitt continued a solo career until his death in 1990 after suffering from heart andkidney disease, .The group remained closely tied to their gospel roots, with a majority of their records containing at least one gospel song.  They produced several albumscontaining only gospel music and recorded a tribute song to the Blackwood Brothers. who influenced their music The Statler Brothers also wrote a tribute song to Johnny Cash who discovered them.  The song was called "We Got Paid by Cash", and it reminisces abouttheir time with Cash.If you have an Echo you can say, Alexa, tell Spreaker to play the Gospel Jubilee.Playlist: 01.
