Ultimately, statins reduce cholesterol synthesis in the liver, which in turn results in the increased gene expression of the LDL receptor in the liver. Consequently, the increased number of LDL receptors on hepatocyte cell surface increases the uptake of LDL from plasma, thus reducing plasma cholesterol.
