Choosing forgiveness and life over anger

from Core of the Bible · host Steve Martorano

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” Matthew 5:21-22Believers should not call someone a fool or an idiot or be unrighteously angry with anyone. According to Yeshua, anger breeds an environment of death. The good news is, God is in the life-giving business. To overcome the error of "killing" someone with our anger, Yeshua encourages the opposite to anger: forgiveness. When you boil it down to essentials, peace that overcomes anger is really based on forgiveness. Forgiveness can heal breaches in trust or the wounds of anger and resentment. Forgiveness is a creator of peace. Where anger breeds death, forgiveness breeds life. Here are some helpful timestamps of some of the main points in today's episode:01:30 Examples of anger causing an environment of death04:25 Examples where forgiveness can bring life07:03 What about God's anger?13:42 The difference between God's anger and ours18:08 God's anger and his justice20:29 Our anger should be slowly started and short-livedIf you enjoyed this weeks podcast, be sure to visit coreofthebible.org to join the conversation through comments, to see daily blog posts on these topics, and to find free downloadable resources regarding the message of the Bible reduced to its simplest form.Have questions about todays topic, or comments or insights you would like to share? Yeshua teaches that anger with a brother is liable to a judgment equivalent to that of murder. Why such a severe judgment on a natural emotion? And how does this reconcile with evidence of God's anger with his own people?
