Choosing Love Today: Faith, Not Law - Episode 2: Why Rules Can't Save You

Galatians— Faith, Not Law –  "Why Rules Can’t Save You" Hi everyone!  Welcome to this week's new mini-series of messages titled: "Grace Over Rules". If you listened to yesterday's podcast, which you can listen to on your favorite podcast platform, you know we just started in the Book of Galatians. In this letter to the church of Galatia, Paul writes to them because the churches in the area were facing a theological crisis. There were legalistic leaders still insisting that Christians must still keep the Jewish Law. Paul wrote this letter to emphasize our freedom in Christ.   So, having said that, let me ask you...Have you ever tried so hard to “do everything right” that you ended up feeling worse instead of better? Most of us have. And that’s exactly where the Galatians found themselves. They started with Jesus. They started with grace. They started with freedom. But somewhere along the way, somebody convinced them that real spirituality meant adding a few extra rules… just to “make sure” they were really saved. And brother, that’s a trap people still fall into today. Because rules feel safe. Rules feel tangible. Rules feel like progress. Rules feel like control. But rules can’t save you. Rules can’t change you. Rules can’t make you righteous. Rules can’t give you peace....Only Jesus can. Paul writes Galatians with the urgency of a man watching people he loves drift back into slavery. He says in chapter 3:3.....“Are you so foolish? After beginning by the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by the flesh?” In other words: “Why are you trying to earn what God already gave you?” And that’s the heartbeat of this whole mini-series. Because grace isn’t God lowering the bar. Grace is God removing the bar entirely — and replacing it with a cross. Grace doesn’t say, “Try harder.” Grace says, “Trust deeper.” Grace doesn’t say, “Fix yourself.” Grace says, “Let Jesus transform you.” Grace doesn’t say, “Prove your worth.” Grace says, “Receive Mine.” Let me give you a picture. Have you ever typed the wrong password into your computer? You try it once. You try it again. You try it slower. You try it faster. You try it with confidence. You try it with frustration. But no matter how many times you enter it… the screen still won’t unlock. That’s what rule-keeping does. You can try harder. You can try cleaner. You can try more consistently. You can try with more sincerity. But rules will never unlock salvation. They’re the wrong password. Grace is the only password that works. Grace is the only thing that opens the door. Grace is the only thing that gives access. Grace is the only thing that gets you in. Rules give you the illusion of progress — but grace is the only thing that actually sets you free. So, as we begin this Galatians mini-series, here’s the truth we’re going to come back to again and again: Rules can guide you, but only grace can save you. Rules can shape behavior, but only grace can change the heart. Rules can modify your actions, but only grace can make you new. This week, we’re going to walk through what Paul told the Galatians — and what he’s still telling us today: Stop trying. Start trusting. Grace over rules. It's all about Faith, not law.
