Choosing Love Today: Faith, Not Law - Episode 3: "Trust Over Trying"

Galatians — Faith, Not Law    “Trust Over Trying”  As Paul writes to the Galatians, he keeps pointing them back to one simple truth: you don’t grow by trying harder — you grow by trusting deeper. And that’s a hard shift for most of us, because we’re used to fixing things ourselves. We’re used to pushing. We’re used to performing. We’re used to proving. We’re used to thinking that spiritual strength comes from effort. But Paul says something different — something freeing: The Christian life isn’t powered by your effort. It’s powered by the Spirit. Let me give you a picture.  The Dead Battery If you’ve ever gone out to your car and heard that awful clicking sound when you turn the key, you know the feeling. The battery’s dead. The car won’t start. And no matter how much you want it to start… it won’t. You can sit there and turn the key harder. You can pump the gas. You can get frustrated. You can try again and again. But none of that will bring the engine to life. Because effort can’t revive a dead battery. You need a power source outside yourself. You need a jump. You need something stronger than your effort. That’s what Paul is saying. Trying harder doesn’t produce spiritual life.......Trusting God does. The Galatians were trying to “jump-start” their spiritual life with rules, pressure, and performance. But Paul reminds them — and reminds us — that real growth comes from the Spirit, not from human effort. Trying harder may feel spiritual…(and it might even make you feel good) but it doesn’t produce spiritual power.......Only God can do that. And here’s the part we don’t like to admit:  Some of us are sitting in the driver’s seat, turning the key over and over, hoping effort will do what only God can do. We’re trying to fix our anxiety with effort. Trying to fix our habits with effort. Trying to fix our relationships with effort. Trying to fix our spiritual life with effort. But effort can’t revive what’s dead. Only the Spirit can bring life. So let me ask you gently: Where are you trying to “turn the key” in your life right now? Where are you pushing, straining, performing, or forcing something that only God can empower? Because.......(listen to me) the Christian life isn’t about trying harder. It’s about trusting deeper. It’s about letting God supply the power you don’t have. It’s about letting the Spirit do what your effort never could. It’s about receiving instead of performing.
