Chris Do is the director, CEO and Chief Strategist of Blind, an Emmy award-winning motion design studio which he ran for over 2 decades. Since founding Blind back in 2014, Chris reluctantly made his first YouTube video which altered the trajectory of his life and career. That’s when he founded The Futur—an online education platform with the mission of teaching 1 billion people how to make a living doing what they love. Chris is also a Vietnamese immigrant who understands building himself from the bottom up. This Episode’s Heavy-hitter’s: A true shining example as a kid, Chris’s father worked his way up, as an immigrant that didn’t speak the language, from a bus boy to the Chief Engineer at a semiconductor factory. Another formative moment was when Chris had a messy breakup that led him to a dark period in his life, where he missed out on going to all the top design schools he had dreamed of. He made a promise to himself while attending a community college, and committed to a life of celibacy for a few years to get himself back on track. Through the organization The Futur, Chris helps people do what they love without losing their soul. He elaborates that part of what that means is being able to step away to recharge your creative juices without having to experience financial turmoil in the process. Chris has the opinion that in order to become masterful at your craft, you’ve got to copy the work of masters you look up to at first. The key is to graduate from that phase of your artistry by creating and embodying your own style. Another creative gem: it isn’t all about the quality of the work when it comes to getting discovered or noticed. While you should hold the utmost standard for your work as an artist, you can’t get stuck in the myth that marketing is unimportant as long as the work is good.
