Chris Hani Remembered

South Africa will once again pay homage to one of its struggle heroes, former South African Communist Party General Secretary and Mkhonto We Siwe commander, Thembisile Chris Hani. Dubbed as one of the most outstanding militants of the armed struggle, Hani was gunned down on 10 April 1993 outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg. Polish immigrant, Janusz Walus, shot Hani in the head just as he stepped out of his car. The assassination, at the hands of apartheid oppressors, was part of a plot by the far-right in South Africa to derail the negotiations to end the racial regime, with late convicted killer, Clive Derby-Lewis, at the helm. Walus and Derby-Lewis were both sentenced to death for the murder, but the sentence was later changed to life imprisonment when the death penalty was abolished when the new Constitution was adopted in 1995.
