Christianity On Canvas : How Artists Express Beliefs Through Art w/ Rev. Prof. Peter Howarth

For centuries, artists have turned to the canvas to explore faith, devotion, doubt, suffering, salvation, and the mystery of the divine. Christian art is not simply about depicting biblical stories—it is a visual language through which generations have expressed, questioned, and experienced their beliefs. In this episode, we are joined by Rev. Prof. Peter Howarth, Professor at Queen Mary University of London and Presbyter at St. George the Martyr, Holborn, for a fascinating conversation about the relationship between Christianity, art, and faith. We explore how artists have represented Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints, biblical narratives, sin, sacrifice, resurrection, and redemption—and how these images have shaped the way people understand Christianity across centuries and cultures. From the masterpieces of the Renaissance to the changing ways contemporary artists approach religious imagery, we ask what happens when theology meets artistic imagination. Can a painting communicate something about faith that words cannot? And what can the way we depict the sacred reveal about the people doing the depicting?Join us for a thoughtful journey through art, Christianity, history, theology, and human creativity, and discover how faith has been painted, interpreted, challenged, and preserved on canvas. When words struggle to express the divine, can art give faith a face?
