Christmas by Injunction

"Christmas by Injunction" is a short story by O. Henry set in the rough mining town of Yellowhammer, where generous prospector Cherokee strikes it rich and returns with a sleigh full of gifts, a Santa Claus costume, and grand plans for the children of the town — only to discover there are none. Two volunteers race across the winter countryside begging families to loan their kids for Christmas, returning with only one sullen, cigarette-smoking ten-year-old who doesn't believe in Santa Claus.
