Christmas Calls You to Inconvenience: Day 4, Blessed Through Trust, Not Comfort

from Pastor Steve’s Daily Devotionals · host Village Church RVA

Christmas Calls You to Inconvenience Day 4: Blessed Through Trust, Not Comfort Devotional Mary was blessed, but not untroubled. She was favored by God, but not exempt from pain. This distinction matters because we often misunderstand what it means to be blessed by God. We think blessing equals ease, favor equals comfort, and God's love equals a problem-free life. Mary's blessing came through her willingness to trust God's word, even when it seemed impossible and would certainly bring hardship. By every human measurement, she should have been ashamed—an unmarried pregnant teenager in a culture that could stone her for such circumstances. Yet she understood that God's definition of blessing is radically different from ours. True blessing isn't found in the absence of difficulty but in the presence of God's purpose working through our lives. Mary didn't worship God because her circumstances were comfortable; she worshiped because she trusted His promises were true and sufficient, even better than what she had planned for herself. This challenges us to examine our own understanding of God's favor. Are we only grateful when life goes according to our plans? Do we only trust God when we can see the outcome? Mary shows us that faith isn't trusting God just to give us what we want—it's trusting that God's promises are true and sufficient for us, regardless of our circumstances. Bible Verse And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. - Luke 1:45 Reflection Question How has your understanding of God's blessing been shaped by comfort rather than trust, and how might God be calling you to redefine what it means to be blessed? Quote “The truly blessed person is the one who takes God at His word, no matter how unlikely it sounds.” Prayer Lord, help me understand that Your blessing isn't always comfortable but is always good. Teach me to trust Your promises even when I can't see the outcome, and to find my joy in Your faithfulness rather than my circumstances. Amen.
