(Brigham Young, JD 1:51)   There seems to be no end to the number of different gods proclaimed by their worshippers. Yet Jesus said, “And this is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou has sent.” (John 17:3)   Knowing and understanding the identity of God is one of the first principles of the Gospel, yet it is one of the great theological mysteries. But even when some of these mysteries are revealed and explained to mankind, they have generally been rejected. It is no wonder that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young had such difficulty teaching these truths to both Mormons and non-Mormons.   Many of those who followed Brigham Young in Church leadership positions experienced great difficulty with his teachings pertaining to the identity of God. They were explained away, misinterpreted, covered over, and even denied.
