美國獨立戰爭是英國與英屬北美殖民地間的戰爭。波士頓倒茶事件後，英國政府將戰船駛入港口，並通過一連串加強殖民地控制的法案，引起各殖民地的一致抵抗，最終爆發美國獨立戰爭。 1776年7月4日，傑佛遜起草獨立宣言，宣告殖民地脫離英國獨立。西元1778年，法國向英國宣戰，其後西班牙與荷蘭亦加入反英陣營，最後大陸軍與法軍的聯軍贏得獨立戰爭，1783年英國正式承認美國獨立。
