拿破崙三世是法蘭西第二共和國唯一一位總統（1848年－1852年）和法蘭西第二帝國唯一一位皇帝（1852年－1870年）。他下令對巴黎進行大規模改造（由奧斯曼男爵主導），奠定了現代巴黎的城市輪廓。他推行積極主動的外交政策，試圖重建法國在歐洲和世界的影響力。1870年，在普法戰爭中慘敗於普魯士，在著名的色當會戰中被俘，帝國隨之覆亡，法國改由法蘭西第三共和國取代。戰敗後他流亡英國，並於1873年在英國逝世。
