日本統治臺灣達半世紀之久，其統治可分三個時期：始政時期、同化時期與皇民化時期。殖民地統治依據「六三法」和「法三號」。日本接收台灣之初，台灣各地武裝反抗活動不斷。「理藩政策」失敗引起原住民的反抗。武裝抗日運動熄滅取而代之是各種社會運動的興起。
