First of it's kind because it was the first all-black cast filmed by a major studio. The story follows Zeke, a sharecropper turned preacher, whose life takes a tumultuous turn when he falls for a seductive city woman, leading to a downward spiral of temptation and redemption. With its dynamic blend of music, dance, and drama, "Hallelujah" explores themes of faith, love, and the struggle between worldly desires and spiritual salvation. Vidor's film broke barriers in Hollywood, showcasing the talent and depth of African American performers at a time when racial representation in cinema was rare. King Vidor himself was white. His cast was all black. The year was 1929, this is Hallelujah!
