Cinema 100 - "The Circus" Starring: Charlie Chaplin

from Cinema 100 · host Robert Gifford / William Delzeith

1928 - Episode 1 - January 6th "The Circus" The date is January 6th, 1928 and the world awaits, “The Circus,” the latest installment from the tramp, simply known as Charlie Chaplin. The Circus takes place, well….at a circus as the Tramp finds himself in a cat and mouse chase with the cops ultimately hiding in plain sight as he gets hired by the circus ringmaster for being funny. There’s just one flaw to his entertainment. He can only be funny unintentionally. Filming began on the Circus back in January of 1926, however many wondered if this film would ever see the light of day as Chaplin faced many adversities on it’s path to premiere. His film studio caught on fire, a bitter divorce litigation, and the death of his mother left Chaplin in a pretty dark place. But as they say, “the show must go on.” And thankfully it did, because to many this is considered to be Chaplin's masterpiece and the 7th highest grossing silent film in history. Ladies and gentleman, this is “The Circus.”
