CIO Podcast - Episode 71: Data, Analytics, and AI with Richard Clark, PhD

from CIO Podcast by Healthcare IT Today · host John Lynn

For the 71st episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we are joined by Richard Clarke, PhD, Senior Vice President and Chief Analytics Officer at Highmark Health to discuss data, analytics, and AI! To kick off this episode, we discuss Clarke’s double role working for a payer and provider and how that has allowed him to do things that would otherwise be difficult if he wasn’t. Then we take a look at the use of AI and GenAI and talk about where it is making the most impact in healthcare today and where we think it will make the most impact 3 years from now. Next, Clarke shares some tips for what people should be doing to prepare for this wave of AI solutions that they might not understand. We then shift from AI to data and analytics, and debate over how much data is enough data. Then we discuss Clarke’s partnership with Google Cloud and the main projects he’s been working on with them. Next, we have a little fun and discuss the possibility of computers being able to just read our brains and how likely we think it is to happen. Then, to wrap everything up, Clarke passes along advice to anyone who’s looking to make a career in data/analytics/AI. Here’s a look at the questions and topics we discuss in this episode: What are you able to do at Highmark Health because you’re a payer and provider that would be difficult to do if you weren’t both? What use of AI and GenAI is making the most impact today in healthcare? 3 years from now, which use of AI and GenAI will be making the most impact? What do some people not understand about what they should be doing to prepare for this wave of AI solutions? How much data is enough data? Why did you choose to partner so deeply with Google Cloud? What are the main projects you’re working on with them? You’re a neuroscientist, typing is good, voice is great, but how likely is it that one day computers can just read our brain? What advice would you give to someone who’s looking to make a career in data/analytics/AI?
