Cities of Refuge (Numbers 35:9-15)- Nichola Torbett

from Bethel Community Sermons · host Bethel Community San Leandro

Guest preacher Nichola Torbett continues our fall sermon series by inviting us into God's vision for cities of refuge, found in Numbers 35. How might cities of refuge help break cycles of trauma and violence by offering space for pause and ceasefire? How might we both seek and become cities of refuge as a way to transmute the suffering and violence of our world into love and freedom? Nichola Torbett is a spiritual seeker, recovering addict, gospel preacher, podcaster, writer, resistance fomenter, dog-walker, nonviolent direct action trainer, and aspiring race traitor. Driven by her passion for both spiritual formation and social change, she co-founded Seminary of the Street, a training academy for love warriors, in 2009 and Second Acts, a liturgical direct action affinity group, in 2014. She is co-editor of Resipiscence: a Lenten Devotional for Dismantling White Supremacy and a frequent contributor to The Word Is Resistance, a podcast from SURJ-Faith and SURJ-Action, enfleshed, and radicaldiscipleship.net. She current serves as associate director of Kirkridge Retreat & Study Center in Eastern Pennsylvania.
