Clay County School Board Battle | Jacksonville News

In Clay County, Florida, a high-stakes school board race pits veteran educator Michele Hanson against newcomer Michael Rathjen, as both battle over books, budgets, and classroom realities. Hanson, known for removing nearly 500 books from libraries, champions parental control — but Rathjen argues for rating, not banning, and brings a business background to tackle the district’s $60 million shortfall. With teachers struggling on low wages and underfunded classrooms, voters are watching closely as candidates clash on funding, vouchers, and what schools should prioritize — all while shaping the future of 200,000 students.
