Clean Hands or a Clean Heart? (Matthew 15:1-20; Mark 7:1-23; John 7:1)

We dig into the moment religious leaders confront Jesus over a seemingly small issue: his disciples eating with unwashed hands. What looks like a debate about tradition quickly turns into a piercing diagnosis of religious hypocrisy, where “doing it right” becomes more important than loving God and obeying his Word.We walk through Jesus’ response as he quotes Isaiah and then exposes a specific, uncomfortable example: Corban. It is a religious-sounding vow that let people keep their money “dedicated to God” while neglecting their own parents. That story forces a hard question: how often do we use spiritual language to defend selfish choices? Along the way, we contrast human tradition with biblical teaching and talk about why external ceremony can never solve internal sin.Then we bring it home for modern Christian living and church culture. We name four traps that can pull even sincere believers into hypocrisy: elevating tradition over Scripture, prioritizing operations over mission, choosing outward ceremony over inward commitment, and managing appearances instead of motives. We close with the real solution Jesus points to: genuine holiness produced by the Holy Spirit, shown through the fruit of the Spirit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
