Climate News: Melbourne protest was small, quiet and yet effective in that the Japanese Consulate was closed for the day
from Climate Conversations · host Robert McLean
About 15 people gathered on the steps of the Japanese Consulate to protest that country's continued investment in and support of the fossil fuel industry, and its use of its presidency of the annual Group of Seven conference at Hiroshima to ensure the sustenance of that issue. The protest, coordinated by the Melbourne office of Friends of the Earth, attracted just 15 people, but that was sufficient to see the Japanese authorities close the consulate for the day and cause an administrative ripple that would find its way to government officials in Tokyo, via the Canberra consulate. A Behind the News video gives us something of a satirical look at the G7. Attempts to record the whole event went somewhat awry and so this episode has only a few words from the Friends of the Earth's Elyse Cunningham who works on the "Sustainable Cities" project.
