Hace unos 550 millones de años, al final del Ediacárico, aparecieron los primeros animales con esqueletos mineralizados, quizá como respuesta a la creciente presión de los depredadores. Entre ellos destacan Cloudina y Sinotubulites, pequeños organismos tubulares que habitaron mares poco profundos de distintas regiones del planeta. Cloudina construía tubos de calcita formados por conos encajados y probablemente estaba emparentada con antiguos gusanos. Sinotubulites poseía un esqueleto de varias capas calcáreas y quizá se desplazaba sobre el fondo marino. Sus fósiles revelan una diferencia intrigante: muchos ejemplares de Cloudina presentan perforaciones causadas por depredadores, mientras Sinotubulites aparece intacto. Estas huellas documentan una temprana carrera armamentística entre presas y cazadores, preludio de la extraordinaria explosión de biodiversidad del Cámbrico.
