The dead of might has people sleep. That's when the spirits creep. Has the belt holes three dark things take power. We like to call it the supernatural hour.
We got seen I don't hear it. I hear it. I hear it. I hear it through yours.
And I think that's what happens now. There we go. So in the other episodes, that's what we hear. Has he been muted the whole time?
I don't think so. Over the last three episodes. That's the episode. My community is not going to be my microphone.
Yeah. You're a new guy. Because we heard Nicole just fine on the last episode. Oh yeah.
Nobody wants to hear my questions. Well, I was sitting here the whole time and yeah, it still sounds like it's coming through here. Well, kind of. We guys are sitting across each other.
So that's becoming through this microphone a little bit. But we are here. So everybody welcome. It's another episode of the supernatural hour.
Let's get started. I am your host, Tassle. To my left, we have Tim, aka Beaker. What's happening?
Or Beaker aka Tim. And to my right, we've got Mad Mike. Hello. He's mad.
Furiously mad. Look at the eyes. They humbly... Okay, I'm not mad at any more.
For violence. I thought they were hungry for Tim. I can't. I can't look.
I can't look. I can't. Stay across the table. That's your eyes and be mad.
He says that melting glow. All right. We've got a lot of material to cover tonight. And we're going to have an interesting topic.
It's one that has been much debated among us whether we're going to do this or not. I don't think it really was. A little bit. I've had a lot of feedback from people who heard about this episode and they're like, we don't know if it's going to be good.
And you know what? Neither do we. But we're going to do it anyway. It's going to be good because we're doing it.
We're going to talk about clowns. Chlorophobia. I'm scared. Everybody loves clowns.
Actually, that's not true. Everybody loves a clown. And we're going to get it. Why don't you?
We should open with that. Everybody, Holly. And everybody is going to find out why we all hate clowns. I love clowns.
I embrace the evilness that is the clown. Clowns aren't evil. Oh, yeah. Did you ever watch the bozo show when you're growing up?
Did you ever watch it? Throw ping pong balls in the bucket and you win like candy. Did you not watch the new trailer for it chapter two that just came out like two days ago? No.
You know, Mike, you clearly don't. You're unfamiliar with the clowns. If you knew the clowns, you wouldn't be as excited about clowns. But we'll talk about clowns a little later on.
You did McDonald's a lot. That just creepy too. That's creepy for a whole new set of reasons. I don't eat in the play place anymore though.
After he's kicked out. That's less creepy. After the restraining order. So let's do a few shout outs here before we get going.
Mike, you had a shout out you wanted to do. Yes. I think there was a story involved with the shout out. Oh, just yes.
I just for the record, I wasn't trying to ignore him. I was walking. He was sitting right next to my boss who just happened to be at the restaurant. So I was going to talk to my boss and he stopped me to talk to me.
And I was just like, because I'd already like to try to engage the conversation with my boss. So had two people talking to me at the same time. Well, let's give a name here. So, we're going to do a shout out to Eric Harrison and his lovely wife, Sarah.
Because yesterday we were down at the Bacon sale thing supporting another podcast on the radio running network. And we're at their event. Apparently I got recognized. And he wanted to thank me for what we do.
And he says he enjoys listening to the show. And I kind of felt like a dick. Because I was going to talk to my boss and I sort of blew him off a little bit. But then I went right back to him.
I'm like, I'm sorry. I apologize. Like, pattern of the fans or trying to get fired. Patter of the fans or panic of the fans or panic of the fire.
Anyway, so Eric, thanks for listening. We appreciate you. Thanks for recognizing to him and not recognizing me. I want to give another shout out real quick to Scott Benassen.
I went and scripted last name really bad. Scott is a truck driver in Australia and stumbled across our show, sent us a few nice messages. We had a deep conversation about all the things in Australia that try and kill you. This is why I remember I need to put my phone on by rate when I go to bed at night because at 2.30 in the morning.
BING! BING! Yeah. Because Australia is on a different time though.
But Castle also works the graveyard. Castle is engaging in conversation. As you say, it wasn't me. Well, it could have been me.
Anyway, Scott, appreciate what you do out there on Australia driving the trucks, keeping the goods moving. And we are grateful to have you as a new listener to the show. Don't listen to the ellipse, they're not good. But he's been listening.
So he's not going to get to this until after he's done listening to the other episodes. He's not going to give us a punter show against the middle season where we weren't as good. Anyway, so shout out to Eric and Sarah Harrison and Scott Benass. Let's talk business.
Tim, what do you got on deck for business? Coming up on July 20th. It's a Saturday, folks. We've got an investigation at the Benson Grist Mill.
Tickets for this will be $35 and we will be starting. I have the venue reserved at 9 o'clock. It's when we'll start. And we might mix things up a little bit on this one.
If we have enough people that have been on investigations before, we might just do a free for all instead of doing our normal rotation. But we'll have to play by ear and see what we said. That works sometimes. And if you've known our been to an investigation, there'll be people there who will help you and take you along.
And I'm not going to release the date yet on this one because I need to talk to you guys about how we want to do this. But I have scheduled and reserved the venue for our paranormal potluck. Oh, excellent. Food.
And there are some plans behind that too. Probably involving a future Patreon, I believe. Yes. Would that be a quick statement?
We're working on trying to get a Patreon set up. We're not quite there yet. We want to get some benefits. It'll make it worthwhile for you guys to be your friends.
One more time. Whoa. Fukari's. It's like, whoa.
And Tim, I do believe there's one last item of business on the set list. Oh, do tell. T-shirts. T-shirts.
Oh, yes. Merchandise. I forgot. We do now have merchandise available at advancedparanormal.com.
It's right on the front page. I didn't have a set list, but I have one now. Yes. Advancedparanormal.com.
We have a link right on the front page there in the main page. There's also a drop down menu for merchandise. But you can go and you can buy T-shirts. You can buy tank tops hoodies, coffee cups.
Coffee cups. If you're looking at advancedparanormal merchandise, you can buy a pillow, tapestry, a wall hanging pitcher. Tapestry. Yes.
iPhone and Samsung cases. You can buy a case for your phone that has the advancedparanormal on it. And then we also do have some merchandise. Not as much as the advancedparanormal.
We still have quite a bit to choose from when it comes to the supernatural hour as well. So if you want a supernatural hour T-shirt, coffee mug, I've already seen some stuff that I personally want to buy. And it's going to be a supernatural hour notebook. So I can actually take notes and bring them to me with me to the recordings instead of just stealing other people's notes.
That'll be the day. That'll be the day. That'll be nice for me to give you some of that stuff. I'll give you some of that stuff.
I'll give you some of that stuff. I'm going to give you some of that stuff. I'm going to get to the next one. We've got to talk about Lorraine Warren.
I kind of want to go on the table and have everybody just say something about Lorraine. You look like you're tearing up there. He's a big climp. So let's go on the table and just talk a little bit about the Warren's impact on each other as far as the paranormal field goes.
Let's start with Mike. Oh sure. Pick up the dude guy. I've never met her.
Neither am I. But I have seen her on TV. And so that makes me an expert. Sure.
No, the Warrens are great. I know that the paranormal world it is today as far as what we know about demonology and what we know about the paranormal world has grown vastly because of them. Also, you know, the major contributors to the Hollywood side of things as well by showing the rights as I was once saying one of the recent documentaries I've seen or maybe was a news article she talked about how it was 20th century Foxx or MGM known as the rights to our lives. Warner Brothers and the rest of them.
Warner Brothers and the rest of them were researching aminibo. Hey, look at that. So yeah, that's why Mike, you can't remember stuff. CRS, it's a horrible disease.
Look it up. Anyway, but no, they without them, I don't know where it would be. I'd be sitting on the other side of the deal. You'd be the new guy.
I would not. Actually, I don't know if I'd be sitting here to bounce with you because the reason why I say that is is I think what we've done or what we've accomplished on putting our team together has been successful thus far on the way that we handle investigations. And a lot of the way we handle investigations has been tailored to what Lorraine and Ed have done on their investigations and that info is passed on down to John's office and you know, Castle being a huge John's office fan. That's pretty much how we've kind of structured how we do our investigations.
We've also had help from other local teams like Sabba that have taught us some things and we've kind of tailored our investigations around those people. But it mainly focuses on like I said, what the warrants have done, what they've taught us. And that helps us when we're going into someone's house, we have that knowledge that they've shared with the world. So it makes it easier for us to go in and kind of decipher and determine what's going on in someone's house and the best course of action to get rid of or to help either the spirits or the people in the house.
You know, and if I went back and looked at my life, that's a kind of a broad statement. But as far as the paranormal field goes, I don't know if I would even be here without the warrants. As a kid, I read a lot of books that they had out on some of their investigations. That's kind of what piqued my interest.
That's what lit me studying and kind of getting into all the information that I could. That huge impact on me growing up. I remember when I was about 21 years old or so getting my hands on a copy of the demon elders for the first time and some of the information I learned out of that book. In fact, in my mid 20s, I called the Lorraine's the warrants used to do a haunted dinner basically where you'd show up to their house around Halloween.
They would take you down into their room of haunted stuff that they had taken and you know, kind of told stories and basically got to hang out with the warrants. And I remember, I was interested in that and I was kind of curious to see how much it costs and kind of some of the details on it. And so I called the number to set it up and I was actually kind of shocked that when I picked up the phone on the other end, I heard a, this is Lorraine Warren, how can I help you? I was kind of shocked because I assumed at this point in their careers that I'd be basically talking to an assistant or a family member or somebody from their team who was going to set that up kind of thing.
But I actually talked to Lorraine and she was very personable and without intending to, we ended up talking for about an hour just had a really continual conversation just about Salt Lake City, touched on some of their cases a little bit. I talked about Ed who at the time had just recently passed. It was kind of one of those defining moments in your life where you're just like, wow, you know, I talked to me really cool and I've always had amazing respect for both Ed and Lorraine and the work that they've done. I know there's a lot of detractors that say that they did it just, you know, to have their right soul so to speak to Warner Brothers.
I genuinely believe that what they did was good work and I do believe they helped a lot of people and they touched a lot of lives with positive. You know, we talked to Andrew Perron who talked about Lorraine Warren and Ed Warren's you know, coming into them with them and their family and I know there's a lot of others out there who have benefited from the warrants. Anyway, Lorraine Warren, she was born on January 1st, or correct, January 27th of 1927. She passed away April 18th of this year.
She's definitely going to be missed in the paranormal film. So, you know, one of the cool things about Lorraine Warren is is you actually have an artifact or a little medallion that she carried on all of her investigations that you actually now continue to carry on on our investigations that we do. I do. I've actually got a blessed medal of a Padre Pio that Lorraine just took on all her investigations and I've also got a bracelet made out of some beads from her necklaces and how I actually got those was they were doing a fundraiser and I believe a certain nephew was a family member for selling some Lorraine Warren memorabilia as part of the fundraiser and as if I would get my hands on that medallion and that bracelet.
So, kind of any type of those items to move those around some of those investigations it was probably in the Abedil House. It was probably in the Conjuring House. It was probably in the Enfield House. So, kind of need to have that.
I like to think she's not gone. She's just investigating on the other side. You know, I always wondered what somebody like Ed and Lorraine Warren think when they get to the other side and get to see firsthand what is there because I suspect that we're all going to be shocked and surprised by what we learned. So, I think we're seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to metaphysical and paranormal things.
I think we all think we have a lot of knowledge even though we know we don't but I think once again there's never going to be shocked at how little we actually do know. You know, it kind of goes into that thing that there's really truly no experts. Just a lot of us kind of fumbling around trying to do the best we can. All right.
Let's move on for some investigations. I believe you gentlemen did Benson Grissner last night. We did. We had any residential's lately in the last couple of weeks.
Although, there's one coming up this weekend, I think. Also, on a new one that just came in within the hour. Nice. Okay, so, but there is we did go to Benson last night.
There was a free event that our friend Paul Welch put together and just invited the entire paranormal community. So, it was actually really nice. Thanks, Paul. We appreciate you.
Yeah, thanks, Paul. Sorry, I couldn't make it. And yeah, it was neat. It was really neat.
It was fun. It was free for all kind of a format. We didn't have set groups. But yeah, no, it was a lot of fun.
We did have a lot of things we actually learned, things we picked up. That's one thing I like about investigating with other teams is you kind of get to learn some new techniques. Good and bad. I've had some not so good experience with some of some teams, but I've also had some that are, you know, you learn some new tricks of this raid.
I believe Mike's wife, Terry's here. And if we can get her on, she's going to talk about some of her experiences. Because she actually let out, actually let a group of some inexperienced people. We're going to course, Terry, onto the air.
And since it's Mother's Day, she's here with us. Yeah, she's saying Mother Efferett, you right now, I can see her face. Pretty much. Welcome, Terry.
Hi. Ladies and gentlemen, Terry Finley. Hello. All right, Terry, tell us what your experience last night.
Tell us what you experienced and what went on. Um, well, we started off in the school building, so I went back to go talk to the, because last time I was there, she talked a lot to me, gone down at me for touching the chalkboard, kind of shocked me. And she was, she was in there again. We talked to her for a little bit, but that was really all we got out there.
It was kind of, um, slow moving at first, because I think there was so many people there that there wasn't a lot of activity, because there was just a lot of commotion, you really can do recordings, which was fine. But then we went over into, I call it the cow building, but I don't even know if there's the cardboard cutout of the cow in there. Oh, yeah, I know what you're talking about. The dairy shed is what I've never been in there before.
Never. And we went in there and made contact with this guy named Jesse found out that he was a father of two that was just kind of hanging out in there and was happy to talk to someone because he hadn't really talked to anybody before. And then we went over into the big mill and the top of the big mill, it was so crowded. We went up there and there was a lot of people out there.
So we're like, all right, let's go down to the basement, because I've never been down to the basement before. So we got down to the basement and we got a lot of flashlight activity and we found out it was the third wife from the place that was there. And she was hanging out down there because it was too crowded upstairs. She didn't like all the people that were up there.
So we got to talk into her and I was kind of talking about how last time we were there, there was a kid that was tugging on our rods, tugged on my rod, tugged on my rod, it's kind of completely non- It was platonic. Platonic rod tugging. We'll just take that a little. Yeah, and it's the only spirit that's ever tugged on our dowsing rods before.
And it was just a little tug, but Mike thought it was awesome. Kind of made me nervous. But found out that it was her son that hit didn't. And his name was Kevin.
So I'm like, well where's Kevin? And he was upstairs with all the group. And I'm like, can you go get him and bring him down here to us? So she went and got Kevin.
He came down. We were talking to him. He remembered us being there. He remembered tugging on my rods.
I tried to get him to do it again, but my spirit guide is very protective of me and would not let him do it. And she actually, since he tugged on the rods, she wouldn't let me talk to anybody else on my dowsing rods. But last night, she actually let people talk to me on the dowsing rods, which was really nice of her. So.
Any other experiences you had last night? Well then later in the night, we went back up to the top of the mail with Tim and talked to Kevin a little bit more. But it was all Mike and Tim talking to him. And he was pulling on Mike's rods again, but it would not tug on mine again.
A lot. A lot. It was actually kind of cool because when he was pulling on the tips of Mike's rods, you could physically see the rods being jerked forward out of Mike's hands. Yeah.
Yeah, because we light up the tuck, the, because our dowsing rods, the tips go on the dark and so you could actually see them like bounce down when he was tugging on them. So like everybody was up there could see that he was tugging on the rods. It was really cool. So we had a lot of first timers there because we had a lot of friends that wanted to come out and try.
Mike's making weird time. I didn't know. You hate not having a mic in front of you to talk. Don't you?
No, I was just kind of giving him clues. Why are you talking? Can't shut up. Mike's singing an airplane.
I mean what you guys do in your free time is between the two of you. We do that later. We're going to do this. But no, it was a neat experience because we had a lot of first timers that showed up.
Some friends of ours have always been wanting to come but didn't want to pay the money to invest to find out that they didn't like it and be waste their money. So it was neat to have these experiences for them to actually see and want to come back and pay the money to do it. But he was going to say more about Kevin. Yeah, yeah.
Sure was. Actually, so there was, I mean it was cool. I think, thank you to a huge thank you to Paul out for putting this together. He rented the whole venue out and let people come for free.
One of the issues that I have and this is just a personal thing, there's so many kids. There was a lot of kids. And for me it's like, it has to have kids there just because I know kids are more open to things and it's easier for them to get kind of bossed or bullied around by certain spirits. Well, I think it's all, well, potentially opens the door for them to mess with stuff on their own that they don't fully understand and get themselves into some trouble.
But beside that fact, I mean, like it was still a fun and eventful investigation. I know at one point we were in the barn and Mark was there with me as well as some of the friends of Mike and Terry and there was kind of like the little loft that is above us. And you could see the lights coming through the slats in the wood and then every now and then you'd see each the light kind of darken like someone was pacing back and forth and fun. So that was kind of cool.
When we first got into the barn, the obvious five that Bear RiverPairon brought with them was gone crazy. Shout out to our friend Shane from Bear River. Shane, David was there in a believer Becca as well. So I do have a story about Shane as well.
But we were, there's a door in the barn that we've never been in before. And right as Mark opened that door, the obvious actually said gateway, which was kind of cool because this came through like right when the door opened. And Mark actually could feel kind of sense the energy of that spirit above us as well. And we also like, we also all saw walking back and forth.
This one, I went back to the pavilion and I was conversing with Shane and some, you know, the other Bear RiverPairon people. And just kind of out of the blue, I just felt like prompted to give Shane a reading. And it was one of his spirit guides. I don't know who it was because I couldn't name anything.
But basically this, it was thanking him for putting together his team and everything that he does. I was kind of letting him know that, I'm like, you've had a lot of cases recently that have kind of fallen through and like clients contacted you within for what a reason, you know, actually they will fall through the thing of investigation. I'm like, I want you to know that these things, they're not your fault. It's your spirit guides are looking out for you and your team and they don't want to send you on anything that they don't think you can handle.
And then he started telling me about his investigation last week where he was actually helping someone and they were actually working with some haunted dolls. And he physically got attacked by one of the entities that was attached to one of these dolls. He showed me a picture of this doll and myself and Laura Robinson, who's on our team, both we didn't like looking at the picture. He just, the energy literally was like jumping off of the phone.
That's how negative this, this entity was. And I have to give him a huge shout out because he was able to keep us cool and like he realized what was going on. He had to separate himself from the group and he was able to kind of recollect himself and get back in there and handle business without affecting without really affecting him and the rest of his team. So basically like it was that's kind of the reading was it was just like, you know, thank you for everything that you're doing.
Whoever the spirit was was just they wanted him to know that they're super proud of him and that they wanted him to continue doing the good work that he's doing. So I thought that was really neat experience for me. But then afterwards we got up into the big mill like Terry was saying we're talking to Kevin and my cousin, the Dowsing rods, it was kind of cool because like I'm just standing there and like, who the heck Sarah and they were able to confirm that Sarah was Kevin's little sister that was also in the building. And then like I said, we saw the rod start tugging and then I just started getting information like they're asking him if he crossed over and I'm like, well no.
And like why not? And I just go, you know, just saying what popped in my head and it was like, I don't know, I just didn't. And as I was saying this stuff, like the rods were confirming basically everything that I was saying. I'm like, well, he's still here because he's looking for family members.
I'm like, one of his brothers were still alive when he passed away. He's looking for the brother and we were able to determine that they were all trying to find each other so they can all cross over at the same time. It was really cool. I've never seen that with a family before where everyone's just kind of waiting so they can find everybody to make sure that they all go.
Nobody gets left behind. Yeah, which I thought was really cool. That is pretty cool. Just for the record, I just wanted to clarify those hand gestures I was making were to get Harry trying to tell them that he pulled on the rods about 20 to 30 times which that whole process which was just, I don't know if you were trying to take care of something else.
It was fascinating. We did have, we did have a lot of scratching in the building and from what we were told it was a like a barn owl or something that had built the nest up in there. And what I thought was kind of interesting as well is, another is a spirit that Michael's talking to near the fire pit. I'm not exactly sure what happened down there with that if you want to.
Sure. So there's, there's been a river, there's a type three spirit down by the fire pit. Pretty negative dude. We've been down there before.
I know Castle got it to, I don't remember what you got it to say. Is that something that went away with Whisper? But we got an EDP on it. I want to say it said kill or die or I can't remember either but it was definitely negative.
It was definitely negative for sure. And you got down there and you could feel it was there. I'd taken one of the guys that was there named Mike took him down there with me and then another man named Jaden and couldn't really get him to respond butch. And then I took with me just as an experimental thing.
I have these light up devil horns that were from a Halloween costume and I put them on and it's weird enough as it is. As soon as I put those on he was all of a sudden interested and he started talking to us and stuff. And he, it wasn't a whole lot of stuff going on but he was moving around and he'd answer a few questions here or there. And then when we, you know, Lara came down and he kind of climbed up.
I think she felt like she kind of chased him away but I think he was kind of done at that point anyway. But it was kind of fun that we did that a lot of people kind of stopped and just kind of looked down there because they see these two red glowing things down in the trees and they'd like stop and they turn their flashlights on and kind of shine their lights down their limits. It's not something I would typically do because I don't want to muck with people too much but I had just a bunch that might be kind of like a trigger type of thing with this particular individual, with this particular spirit and it did for a minute. So, so to tie that spirit back into the owl, we actually asked Kevin if he liked the owl and we got a yes response and you know I'm hearing this in my head as well and they're wanting to know why and I just, I go well it's because he keeps the bad thing away and Dowsing Rod's confirmed this gave us a yes.
So and I know at this point some of the investigators, some of the newer people, they instantly felt better, they felt kind of lighter in the air because they knew that owl for whatever reason was keeping that negativity out of the building. So, we were able to confirm it, yeah that that whatever reason that owl was acting as like some sort of guardian. I remember that for an extra residential destination. How do I keep the things at my house?
You need a barn owl. Well, this isn't the first story I heard about an owl. Check, check, check, check, check, check, or no, I was actually Randy Bullow. I was telling us a story about an owl that was at her house and I don't remember the exact details but I know she talked to somebody else about it and it was it's a type of owl that's not actually made up here to Utah.
It's from somewhere else and she basically told it was some kind of like old man and it was there kind of watch and protect over things. Oh, interesting. I've never heard that about owls before. Yeah, this is the first time I'm hearing about it too but it's kind of cool to know that there's something going on there so maybe we have to look more into that and figure something out.
So, I have to ask you with Shane's cursed dolls that he dealt with. First off that's kind of cool especially for Shane because he doesn't usually have experiences. He's kind of a skeptic from my experience with Shane. Were they able to deal with an animal bat issue?
For the most part, yes I think it's still an ongoing case. They got some selenights, some crazy crazy cool selenights from I want to say it's called the spiral gem or gem. It's kind of on the north side of the Great Salt Lake and I've never felt energy like this. Oh, just spiral jenny?
Yes, thank you. Gotcha. They got selenite from there and they actually showed me a piece and I have never felt this kind of energy off of selenite before. There's something special about the selenite.
As soon as they showed it to me like I know Shane's got a piece, one of the other investigators got a piece, they actually gave a piece to the client that they were working with and for whatever reason this piece of selenite it's actually helping kind of keep some of those attachments to all of the bay. I know there's probably some more work that needs to be done with that family and then obviously if they need our help we're more than welcome to help them out but I think they have a pretty good handle on that case. But I remember they showed me the selenite and I remember looking at Shane and I just go you need to get a piece of this, a small piece or whatever and carry this with you because I'm getting that it's going to bring you luck. It's going to bring you and your team luck.
It's going to protect it as long as you've got this on you while you're out messing with your team. It's going to protect you and your entire team. And then as his other investigator showed me her piece of the selenite that hit me and it came to me and I'm like you know you need to put this on like your headboard or your side table while you're sleeping like this is going to help with the headaches that you've been having. And she's just kind of like you know know how I know that she has headaches.
I'm like you've had some sort of head problems or something right. Because the first thing I had was it's going to fix whatever's going on with your head like you've been having headaches and she's like yeah so I'm like yeah. I feel like if you put this in your room while you sleep it's going to help with that. So I mean this is I've never, it's not something that selenite normally does.
So when I saw it's cleansing stone it cleans itself it cleans its other stones but there was like there was something special about this particular selenite that I just found fascinating and I need to go get some and show it to you because I even had Laura a piece of it. Laura Robinson I want to remember to get her and she just loved the energy coming off this thing. This is there's something different than some stretch while at the selenite. I know where it is yet but it's there.
Interesting. All right well shall we get on to our topic at the hand tonight? Yep. I know I'm going to be a really short show.
We're going to talk clowns. Like we're talking about crusty. Hey kids. Hey hey hey.
All right so why clowns? Well there's kind of a weird fascination and fear of clowns that I thought was rather interesting that fear we would kind of get into a little bit. Everybody loves a clown. So why don't you?
So historically the first buddy Holly recorded a history of clowns was about 2500 BC in ancient Egypt. They're also used by the Greeks. They were used in kind of like plays but they're used and kind of symbolized by unintelligent people. They were usually like peasants that were kind of stupid if you will.
The Romans also used clowns. That term clown in the Roman language actually kind of translated into like ditch nigger. And so they were again kind of these stupid peasants is kind of how they were portrayed. Clowns kind of evolved though from the early Egyptian Greek and Roman roots into basically the Italian Jester which I think a lot of people are familiar with.
The guy with the goofy hat with a bunch of bells on it. And then Shakespeare was the first one who actually combined kind of the peasant type but with some wit. And so for Shakespeare the clown was kind of a humorous nobody who kind of poked fun at his other actors if that makes sense. And I'm just kind of buzzing through the history here then we'll kind of get into a little bit more detail.
I know at one point the Jester the court Jester was actually the only one who was allowed to poke fun at the king and the queen. Otherwise that was like an off with your head thing but the Jester that was his job. And if he wasn't funny like you know if it wasn't good humor then sometimes they would take that paint that he would wear on his face and that they would actually kind of cut his cheeks up and make carve a smile as a form of punishment into his face. Kind of like a Heath Ledger is a Joker but for real.
Yeah for real. And that's a hard job to be a Jester because as any stand up comic can tell you right Tim? Yes. It's hard to be funny all the time.
Oh it is especially when it's like it's pop. Especially when you're running a product cast. Especially yes. Well improv is probably one of the really hardest forms of comedy because I mean you have to come up with that stuff on the spot.
Like you know stand up comedians actually have a script that they go through and they kind of memorize for their shows. That's a improv. It's probably harder. And I'm sure that's what Jesters would do because like they were they were there to make fun of like people's names or they would throw stuff at people and make fun of them.
And it's not something you can you know script if you're just making fun of random people that are walking by. It's a whole new thing to the funnier die type thing right. Well I'm interestingly enough kind of talking about the Jesters and how they they can make fun of the king and queen. That was kind of part of their job was to basically call kings and queens out on doing stupid stuff.
There was actually was I do my research it was noted that like I jester in basically China I don't know what they call a Chinese jester back in the day convinced the emperor of China that painting the Great Wall was really stupid. And so they opted not to paint great wall different colors. And so that was part of their job is to keep kings from doing stupid stuff as a process of making fun of them. And so how effective that was who knows but it was part of their job is to call them out on dumb stuff.
And that's what I do with the castle. That's not too far from the truth. But it goes both ways. This is true.
So the first client actually like the white face paint was a clown who was called Grimaldi in the 1800s mid-1800s. And that was kind of the first clown that we would probably recognize as a clown would be Grimaldi. That was kind of the birth of the modern clown. The hogo clown the ones you see with kind of the black face with the white smile.
Those were kind of kind of showed up post-level war. And it said that that was kind of a basically post-level where you had a lot of freed slaves who were traveling the country by rail. They're closer to their because they were having a tough time finding jobs. You know they're just in rough shape because they were basically broken in the civil war area.
You know racism was so rampant that if you're black and somebody didn't want to hire you, you had no recourse. You had no rights. You were just kind of basically homeless because you didn't have any option. And so there were two minstrels in the day who basically put on the modern equivalent of black face and painted these big white exaggerated smiles on their face and were tattered to close and were more or less kind of dressing up as black face clowns kind of making fun of these indigent African-Americans who are these released slaves.
So you kind of do branches of a clown. You had kind of the Grimaldi white face style clown and you had the hobo clown and you still see some of that today although it's a little more tasteful than the black face of the post-level war era. You'll still see the hobo clowns with kind of the dark makeup on the lower half of their face with white exaggerated lips. So clowns became kind of associated with two different genres of evil.
You have the slapstick clowns with the Grimaldi's. Then you have the dark depressed person clowns which are kind of your hobo clowns. Now clowns up until this point were kind of considered humorous. You go to the circus and clowns would basically do clowny things that'd be silly.
You'd see bad things happen to clowns. You'd kind of see them bounce back and it's kind of a morality lesson that hey even though things are hard you can still bounce back and you don't have to let it get you down. So clowns are actually viewed quite positively up until about the 60s or 70s. 60s or 70s I think culture moved away from the circus and you started to do more in terms of movies and TV shows and that's when things got kind of depressing and weird.
It's when a lot of... Now if you ever get to make a scary movie what's scarier than taking something good and twisting it to be creepy and bad. And so I think from the 60s they're on we've seen all these creepy clown movies and clowns for most of humanity now have become more of a thing of evil versus something that was good. What really kind of set it off though was the John Wayne Gacy case.
And we're not going to get to it a whole lot of detail on the case just because we are going to probably do a whole lot of stuff on that later. But either one of you guys want to go to John Wayne Gacy a little bit. John Wayne Gacy in case he didn't know was the serial killer in the 70s but one of the things that he did besides murder people he was a clown. He was a clown.
He would go to children's parties and he would entertain and people loved him. He was very well known in his community. Very well respected clown that people enjoyed watching. They enjoyed what he did.
But it was kind of that when they found out that he was a serial killer that's kind of what started putting the fear into people not wanting to invite strangers or clowns into your home anymore because at that point even a clown can get away with murder. What's that? You want his things. John Wayne Gacy actually coined the phrase, or did he use the phrase that a clown can get away with murder and it's because nobody suspects the clowns so clowns innocent and fun.
And it's not even proved that he found any victims at his day job as the clown. It was... Everything they found was actually buried in his crawl space underneath the house. Right.
You know back in 2016 I don't know if you guys remember that or not. Oh my gosh. Clowns just kind of standing out by roads and weird places and other woodlines. There's kind of this weird clown in hysteria.
And there's been some... It was all over the place. I mean you'd see clowns like midnight one o'clock in the morning standing in the park. There's times at 11 o'clock in the morning people find clowns standing on their doorstep.
We're in the doorbell. It was crazy. I don't know what set this whole thing off but you know the last thing you expect to see is you know looking at your front door some creepy killer looking clowns standing outside your... You don't know who that is.
Yeah. Well I mean there was those videos that were going around about the same time too. Like it was before that and there was these guys that would joke around and the dress up was clowns and they'd like put like a big body down with like a watermelon for a head and they'd smash the watermelon to scare people as they come around the corner. By the way that happened in Europe because it happened in the United States they'd have been shot and killed.
But yeah so in the... And that was kind of thought that might be kind of a publicity stunt for the movie it that was coming out shortly thereafter. It's also thought this kind of a viral thing where maybe two or three people didn't and other people thought hey that'd be hilarious to do that. But what we don't need type pods kids.
Yeah don't need type pods but what we don't remember is that they had a similar history back in 1981. In 1981 they had people dressing as clowns like trying to solicit children out of white kidnapper bands. That was before my time. Yeah they had probably seven or eight different reported clown attempted kidnappings in the 80s about 1981 as the wrench when that happened.
So 2016 was almost kind of a repeat of that short of the instead of kidnapper band they're just standing on the edge of creepy woods. I think a lot of that idea if you think back to the and not to jump too far ahead into the movie it. But there's a scene where Pennywise is standing on the side of the road as the car is driving by and he's just waving and just has that creepy look and that creepy wave and I think people just doing that same thing. It gets that same emotion just like that.
And we're gonna get near the end of this section. We're gonna get to kind of why clowns are scary aside from the John Wayne Gacy. Why they give people the creeps. Let's talk about five evil clowns through history and the first one I want to talk about was an incident that happened May 26th 1990 in New Zealand.
There's a woman named Marlene Warren who heard a knock at the front door and it's a clown. The clown at the back door. Did you hear that? I did.
What was that? I hope there's a clown near my back door. I hope that was. Tays over there laughing it was one of her games or something on our phone.
Okay so May 26th 1990 in New Zealand Marlene Warren hears a knock at her door. So she goes to her front door and she looks out the front door. She sees a clown with a thing of flowers and some balloons. So Mrs.
Warren opens the door and the clown immediately shoots her in the head. Her son ran to the door and saw a clown with brown eyes running away from the scene. They did an investigation and they found out that Mr. Warren was actually having an affair with one of his assistants.
They had an assistant happen to have brown eyes. They believed that was who this killer clown was but they were unable to actually prove it. Because of the investigation Mr. Warren was actually found to be in violation of several felonies regarding his auto business turning back odometers, fraud, laundering money, things of that nature.
So he ended up spending some time in prison but they were never able to prove that his mistress was the clown. So that clown is still on the loose today. The clown that shot Mrs. Warren in the head.
The next one is kind of creepy. There was a couple October 28th 2013 in Battleground Washington. A couple came to a fast food restaurant and it was in the drive-thru and there's an older blue truck with two men in it. One of the men was dressed as a clown.
The couple kind of got to an argument or the woman's boyfriend got to an argument with the two men. It's unknown what they argued about but they pulled around the business after the argument and the blue truck was awaiting and the man dressed as a clown pulled out. The boyfriend basically severely beat him. He didn't die but he had several long-lasting injuries, deafness, soprolosis, things of that nature.
The third evil clown we'll talk about is a cletsal to clown. Now cletsal was a law enforcement officer here in the United States. He performed for church groups in hospitals and orphanages. Cletsal had made a couple trips to orphanages in the Philippines.
On a second trip back, the Philippines is kind of known for sex trafficking. So on the second trip back, customs kind of went through his luggage a little bit better than they had the first time. And when searching his luggage back in they scared the cletsal had been manufacturing child pornography from some of the orphanages in the Philippines. Several of Cletsal's local victims came forward and said that basically he was inappropriately touching them as he was acting as a clown.
So cletsal was arrested and went to jail. Cletsal was later killed by a jailer who used repeated shock from a taser until Cletsal died. During the subsequent investigation into the jail, it was determined that any of the records as far as the tasers went and any of the videos that was inside the jail was mysteriously missing. So Cletsal was basically kind of executed by a dirty jailer if you will.
That's what he gets for not being a funny clown. So we already talked a little bit about John Wayne Gacy. I'll just touch on a couple more facts involving him. Like I said, we'll probably do a whole episode on him down the road.
But he was a mortuary pendant. His first instance of depravity was basically he abused a male teenage corpse by climbing the coffin with it. And he later joined a clown clip called the Jelly Jokers, which we kind of talked about and then him eventually being responsible for the death of 33 young men. Now the last one is a clown called Zazabi.
In 1913 he worked at the floral pavilion theater in the UK. And it's believed that that theater is now haunted by Zazabi the clown. The theater is still in operation today. Zazabi wasn't very funny.
He had a kind of a sharp nose and he was known for basically being an alcoholic and a drug addict. The crowd's kind of hated it because basically he was just a poo sound. He came out there and tried to be funny but he was just kind of a lush and really kind of made him ask himself on the stage if you will. It was later found out that Zazabi had plotted to hurl a bucket of gasoline into the crowd and set a crowd of fire.
That was his plan. But the owner of the theater kind of caught winded his plan before it happened and had Zazabi arrested. Now Zazabi ended up spending the rest of his life in a asylum where he passed away. Now people in the area have reported seeing Zazabi at the theater wandering his spirit wandering the aisles.
They've seen his spirit backstage and children who live in the area have reported seeing Zazabi's ghost the ghost of a disembodied clown hovering alongside their beds in their rooms. They've all described Zazabi the same way with a sharp pointed nose and kind of described his clown costume the same way. So there are five evil clowns through history. I'm not sure there's more but those are the five I could think of.
Fantastic. Should we talk about clowns and movies? Sure. I mean that's why we're here.
All right. Really interested in talking about clowns and why people are afraid of them. So let's talk about clowns as far as the types of clowns are movies because there's three general kind of arc types of clowns. Mike do you want to talk about the first one?
Sure. The first one is a masked clown. So if you've ever seen the movie was it uh did you obviously lost it here? I think it was the killer clowns from outer space.
Those actually would not be masked clowns. Wait wait wait. The masked clown would be like the funny man would be considered a masked clown. Actually you know I might be wrong there too.
I don't think the funny man is a masked clown. Basically without naming a specific movie let's just go here. A masked clown is basically any clown character in a movie or even in real life who's just a clown mask. It's a person wearing a mask being a creepy clown.
So imagine uh obviously not a clown but like Jason from front of the 13th. Well I mean I think a better example at this point would be the opening sequence of Batman the Dark Knight. Obviously the Joker's in this movie but he had all of the bankrupts wearing clown masks. Yeah exactly that would be a masked clown.
And there are multiple movies where somebody wearing a clown mask is basically going around being a murder or engaged in other mayhem. Creepiness. That would be a masked clown. Speaking of the Joker 10 tell us about human clowns.
Human clowns would be exactly that. It's clown. It's just it's a person that's wearing makeup. Some examples of the argument clown we've already talked about a little bit would be John Wayne Gacy.
Both of the clown would be another example. Ronald McDonald. And then like we said the Joker. I know he's a fictional character but the Joker was actually one of the first clowns that kind of came into pop culture and was like the 40s or the 50s.
And he was just a crazy like serial killer clown up until this point. Most people just kind of like he's looked at clowns as a slash the clowns. So that's the human clown. That's all it is.
It's just a person who's a clown doing job. Alright then the third clown archetype is the human clown. And this would be like the killer clown from outer space. This would be like it the clown from it.
Anyways these are clowns that are not human. These are clowns that are demonic in nature or they're alien in nature or they just have the parents of the clown but they're clearly not human or somebody in a mask. So with that also include animated clowns such as Krusty or what about the stuffed doll one that's in poltergeist that totally creeps people out. I think the poltergeist clown would count as a human clown.
I think this Krusty and the Simpsons I think would have to count as a human clown because those are all supposed to be human characters. So I think Krusty is supposed to be a human basically. Although it seems like his makeup is part of him. Yeah, seriously.
One episode where he's like the same makeup or like JoJo circus. Alright, we're getting our family. So let's kind of talk a little bit about clowns through media and we're going to just kind of run through the the 40s up until the 2000s. So we're just going to touch on a few films and just kind of talk about their noteworthiness in clown lexicon and lore.
So first kind of scary clowns showed up in Edgar Allan Poe story. And then there's the clown from the opera, Pagalucci I think. Pagalucci. That's not right either.
But Pagalucci. My name Charles Dickens actually also wrote a story about a clown. Oh he did. Oh okay.
There was one movie that I do want to mention before you go this. It's in 1924. Lon Chaney played a clown. The movie is called He Who Gets Slapped.
And it's actually a sad clown because he was a scientist who failed and was forced the only job he could get was to become a clown where he just got continuously slapped at the crowds lapping and he's just miserably getting slapped. You know there's another movie. That's actually pretty famous one. And I got a camera in the name of it off hand.
I've got it here in my list. But it's the same kind of thing. It's basically a guy who is like an accountant at a theme park and he basically has a nervous breakdown. And so the theme park besides that well he's kind of off his rocker.
Let's put him in some white face makeup and send out to be a clown. And he goes out and he's a clown. Essentially he does that job. He's doing okay with that job.
He's still kind of out of his mind. Well some new ownership comes in and he said they're going to fire him. And so he ends up going up on a tower in the musical park with a sniper rifle and is going to start taking people out. Fortunately for the movie he's a bad shot and they stop him.
It's kind of a comedy but twisted comedy. He's shooting coke cups and I think it was in the 80s when that movie came out. And by today's features it's a little too close to home with a whole sniper rifle and a tower type of thing. So I know if I'm ever going to leave like when you look at the opera of Pagliachi I don't think he was actually like an evil clown per se.
It was more to show that like human clowns are people. They have emotions and feelings just like everybody else. It's kind of what that whole opera is about. What's interesting is uh I want to touch on the Joker again for just a second.
Now as Tim as you mentioned the Joker started out in the 40s he was kind of a he was a serial killer. He was a bad dude. In the 50s though the comic industry came out with uh what they call it. The comic code of ethics is what they called it.
And uh basically parents in the 50s were kind of upset. The comic books were so violent and kind of dark. And so in the 50s they kind of lightened him up made a little bit more kid friendly and the Joker kind of turned into more of a he's still a bad guy but more of an actual goofy clown. They didn't quite really know what to do with the Joker.
Well I mean I didn't like Heath Leathers Joker where he's just he just does stuff because they kind of I mean they have that line in the movie where he's like some men just want to watch the world burn. And that's more like what the original Joker was before they came out with that act that you just mentioned where they kind of dumped him down a little bit to make him a scary. Like he was just all out crazy and he would just kill people for no apparent reason. You know he kind of stayed like that up until about the 80s and in the 80s they start kind of going dark again with the Joker.
Um but they kind of mixed him in the 80s. He kind of had like the weird clowny aspect with the kind of dark aspect. And then when they went to Heath Leathers I think he went all the way fully back into the the dark aspect was just a touch of the clown aspect. I'm really curious to see how they're gonna do with uh walking Phoenix uh in the Joker movie that later this year.
I've only seen one trailer for that and it looks kind of bizarre but I'm sorry. It looks tree. It's very intriguing it's it's a different backstory that actually gives kind of some backstory about the Joker. I mean in the 1980 Batman movie it's Technicals and he dropped him a vat of acid that makes him the way he is.
In this movie it's it basically seems like society has beat him down so much that he just breaks and becomes mad and it's it's the way he kind of they show him in the trailer. It seems very intriguing. I'm very interested to see where they go with this movie. You know I have a whole big list of movies involving evil clowns uh from again Edgar Allan Poe to 2014.
