Code Wack - States Push Back Against Medicaid Managed Care

from Progressive Voices Hosted by Progressive Voices

This time on CodeWACK! Today, most people on Medicaid get their care through private insurers called Managed Care Organizations, or MCOs—like Aetna and UnitedHealthcare. Critics say these companies add layers of bureaucracy that make it harder for patients—most of them low-income—to get care. They discourage physicians from accepting Medicaid patients by making them jump through hoops to get treatment pre-authorizations, or even to get paid. Are Managed Care companies making health care more expensive, not less? How are some states reacting? Are legislators starting to wake up and see through the hype? Some are. All this and more is discussed in a recent report from Physicians for a National Health Program, Removing the Middlemen from Medicaid. To unpack it, we spoke with Dr. Alankrita Olson—a public health physician and PNHP board member who advocates for a single-payer healthcare system. This is the 2nd of a two-part series. Brill AN OPEN FORUM FOR PROGRESSIVE WRITERS AND THINKERS The Athletes' Voices Andreia Do you believe that female athletes are not as interesting as male athletes? Not as strong or performant? What if I told you that your perception probably comes from the poor media coverage in women’s sports? UNESCO estimates that globally 4% of sports media coverage is about women. According to a study published in 2020: Female athletes receive the same amount of news coverage as they did in the 1980s. They are also often photographed in “passive” poses, compared to the “active” poses of their male counterparts. I believe, it’s time to change that! This podcast is for anyone who wants to learn about women’s sport. But I’m doing it mostly for women who like me felt like they could never understand sports, that it wasn’t their place but still deep down had an interest in it. So let’s keep learning with the athletes’ voices!
