Coffee and chocolate are the latest products to be targeted for replacement by “climate capitalists,” i.e., those seeking to replace and then patent everything natural in the name of saving the world. Although fake meats grown in a laboratory are all the rage, the Wall Street Journal, quoting decades old out dated computer models, says we may need to switch to synthetic coffee sooner than later, and this would involve lab grown plant cells from plants that give us coffee and chocolate. The quoted research says natural coffee beans have a “narrow genetic base,” and therefore implies how we must genetically modify them. There is great irony in replacing coffee with a synthetic substance, too, because the historical record shows that from the Ottoman Empire to France, London, and the colonial Americas, it was precisely the cheap availability and community around this liquid which fomented political revolutions against royalty and corruption.
