Colorado Asks for Federal Disaster Aid | Colorado Springs News
from Colorado Springs News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Governor Jared Polis is urgently asking President Trump for a major disaster declaration to help Colorado recover from the devastating Aspen Acres and Gold Mountain fires, which have destroyed over 300 homes and crippled infrastructure across three counties. The Gold Mountain fire, sparked in June near Ouray, burned nearly 40,000 acres and is now 87% contained, while the Aspen Acres blaze—Colorado’s largest wildfire in history—scorched over 102,000 acres and remains 77% contained. Though evacuations are over, families are returning to find their homes gone, and flooding and debris flows continue to threaten safety, including a tragic death in August near Beulah. Polis is requesting three types of federal aid: individual assistance for residents in Pueblo and Custer counties, public assistance for all three counties to repair infrastructure and clear debris, and hazard mitigation grants to prevent future disasters. He thanks first responders and local leaders for their tireless efforts and hopes the President will approve the request so Coloradans can rebuild their lives and communities.
