Colts Cast: Positional review heading into the offseason | Linebackers

As we continue into the Indianapolis Colts pivotal offseason, we move into the team's linebacker corps to see where the position stands for the 2019 season. The unit showed a massive improvement this past season with the addition of All-Pro rookie Darius Leonard, some great improvement out of Anthony Walker, as well as a couple other rookie additions in Matthew Adams and Zaire Franklin. With some initial leadership assistance from Najee Goode, the unit went from one of the worst positions in 2017 to one of the better groups in the league in the AFC in 2018. In spite of their improvements, Colts' GM Chris Ballard is not one to sit on any position group and become satisfied with what they've achieved. Each position can always be upgraded, more competition in training camp will be added one way or another, and there are several NFL free agents sitting out there who could do that at the bare minimum. There's little doubt that Leonard will be the starting WILL next season, but are the MIKE, and SAM spots locked up? I don't think so. Walker was very good in 2018, but could someone unseat him, moving him to a possible role as the defense's SAM? Maybe. We'll discuss. The bottom line is that Ballard, Frank Reich, and Matt Eberflus want to see the most competitive defense that they can build, and virtually nobody is safe from going from a starter, or key depth piece to being on the outside looking in in 2019 if the team can find a way to get better.  Today Matt Danely looks at each role in the linebacker corps, what they have in the way of free agents, whether they should be re-signed, and what the rest of the NFL brings in terms of possible additions to the Colts' defense.  Learn more about your ad choices.
