Columbia University- Forgotten Nuclear Lab & The Manhattan Project

The latest episode of my podcast has been released – Columbia University – Forgotten Nuclear Lab & The Manhattan Project and can be heard at www.Harlem-Stories.com In this episode I discuss the role that Columbia University played both in The Manhattan Project as well as a Nuclear Testing Lab. The US Military had a longstanding policy to name projects based on where they were located. When the Military decided that they wanted to experiment with nuclear for explosives- they reached out to J. Robert Oppenheimer to help create the first nuclear bomb. He was of course located in Manhattan- and thus the name of the project was called The Manhattan Project. While early portion of the Manhattan Project was located much further south in Manhattan, work was later moved to the Columbia University campus- in the basement and tunnels of Pupin Hall. It is rumored that the cyclotron that was used in these experiments are still sealed in the tunnels beneath the university. As the U.S. started to adapt to nuclear power- whether from military sources such as Submarines or from reactors for local generators- another building owned by Columbia became the testing lab for these precisely calibrated parts.
