This week’s Come Follow Me for Teens episode focuses on 1 Samuel 8–16: “The Lord Looketh on the Heart.” In these chapters, we study three powerful lessons that can help teens examine what is happening in their hearts: Israel asking for a king so they could be “like all the nations,” Samuel learning that the Lord looks on the heart instead of the outward appearance, and David playing the harp for Saul as the evil spirit departed from him. Israel’s request for a king teaches us about the danger of peer pressure and the temptation to become more like the world in order to fit in. Samuel’s search for the next king reminds us that while people often judge by appearance, popularity, labels, mistakes, or first impressions, the Lord sees the heart. And David’s music shows us the powerful influence music can have on our thoughts, emotions, desires, and ability to feel the Spirit. This episode invites teens to ask: Where do I feel pressure to be like everyone else? How can I learn to see others more the way the Lord sees them? What music, media, and messages am I allowing to shape my heart? The message of 1 Samuel 8–16 is deeply relevant for teens today: God has called us to be different from the world, He sees more in us than others may see, and what we allow into our hearts can either invite light and peace or pull us away from Him.
