Common Core – An Introduction for Libraries (LIS Colloquium - AUDIO)

from SJSU iSchool Audio/Video Podcast

In 2010, the Common Core Standards were introduced. Since then, 45 states have adopted the standards for K-12 schools. The Common Core standards have introduced instructional shifts that impact academic libraries and what librarians can expect in regard to students’ prior knowledge. Additionally, the new standards may impact what public libraries can expect in regard to resource needs. There has been some debate around the Common Core standards, and confusion as to what to expect. This session will introduce the Common Core standards, the Instructional Shifts in schools related to the new standards, and the basic implications for academic and public libraries.
