Communion

from LifeWell Messages

Why does this church take communion every week, passing a small wafer and cup that, to an outsider, might look strange? This message goes to 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 to recover what the early church understood the meal to be, and why they placed it alongside teaching and prayer. The teaching offers four movements within communion: looking back to remember Jesus rather than ourselves, looking in to examine our hearts without measuring our worthiness, looking around because the meal was always communal, and looking forward to the wedding supper of the Lamb. The argument reframes communion away from isolated guilt toward remembrance and gratitude, noting that the word Eucharist means thanksgiving. Because the risen Christ is alive, the meal is meant to be shared with joy, a foreshadowing of the celebration believers will share in eternity.
