Community-Driven Systemic Change: Reimagining Philanthropy From the Ground Up with mc2h Foundation and School for Life

I'm thus delighted to bring you this conversation on community-driven systemic change featuring the mc2h Foundation and one of their partners, School for Life Ghana.In a world where traditional top-down philanthropy has dominated for decades, we're witnessing a crucial shift toward approaches that center community voices and solutions. The evidence for this shift is compelling: According to the 2023 Global Philanthropy Report by the Council on Foundations, foundations that implement participatory grantmaking practices report 42% higher satisfaction among grantees and demonstrate 37% more sustainable outcomes over five-year periods (Council on Foundations, 2023).Despite this evidence, less than 10% of international philanthropic dollars reach local organizations in the Global South directly (OECD, 2022). Furthermore, only about 2% of humanitarian and development funding goes to locally-led initiatives (Localisation Workstream, Grand Bargain, 2022).The mc2h Foundation represents a new generation of philanthropists challenging these statistics. Focusing on early years literacy in West Africa, they've evolved from supporting established organizations to embracing smaller, community-led initiatives. Their approach embodies a deeper understanding that sustainable change cannot be imposed from outside but must be cultivated from within communities themselves.School for Life, a locally-led organisation that has been delivering programs in education to rural communities in Ghana for 30 years and one of mc2h's local partners, demonstrates how community-driven literacy programs can create lasting impact.
