Compassionate Responsibility: Breaking the Cycle of Violence with Joey Kim

from From the Ashes · host Valerie Hwang Beck

This week’s guest is my long-time friend and college dance crew mate, Joey Kim. Joey’s story of resilience and healing is both profound and inspiring. In this conversation, we reflect on our college days at Northwestern University, our time in ReFresH Dance Crew, and how we have evolved over the past decade and a half navigating the challenges of life. Joey and I discuss how we've overcome our explosive tendencies, and how dance, healing practices, and forgiveness have played pivotal roles in our growth. This is the last episode of Season 1, and I want to thank you all for joining me on this journey. We’ll be back in November for Season 2 with more incredible stories of resilience and rebirth! About Our Guest: Meet Joey. A finance exec by day and a dancer by night. Growing up in a violent, repressive environment, Joey found sanctuary in martial arts and street dance, using them to heal PTSD and anxiety through artistic physical expression. Joey lives by the motto, “when words are not enough, let your body speak.” In addition to moving his body, Joey has also worked with several plant medicines to deepen his healing journey and is a huge advocate for mindful entheogenic use to heal and spiritually awaken. Key Moments: [00:46] – Joey shares his first introduction to Refresh Dance Crew at Northwestern and what drew him into hip hop.   [04:59] – Discussing empowerment and how hip hop became a tool for self-expression and empowerment.
