Confused but Empowered: Giovanna Silvestre on Finding Peace in Chaos

The holiday season is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but for many, it can be the most stressful and confusing. Giovanna Silvestre, author of the upcoming book "Confused Girl: Find Your Peace in the Chaos", joined Walt on his podcast to discuss how to navigate the chaos and find inner peace, no matter what's happening around you. Giovanna opened up about her own struggles growing up, describing how her mother's over-the-top Christmas decorations and expectations would often lead to breakdowns. "There was this pressure to be like, 'Oh, yay, Christmas!' like, as a little girl, you know, I had to pretend. It wasn't like, just this pure joy. It was like, 'Okay, let's pretend.'" This pressure to have the "perfect" holiday experience is something many can relate to. Walt and Giovanna discussed how the holidays tend to heighten feelings of lack and loneliness, even for those who are generally content. Giovanna shared a story about a friend who was frantically trying to find a date for the holidays, despite normally being very grounded. "It was just very interesting. I'm like, 'Wow, this, it's really hitting on some things with people.'" The conversation then shifted to the idea that confusion is actually a virtue - that it's the first step towards finding true peace and happiness within ourselves. "Confusion is a virtue, because to even find that happiness, that that level of contentment in yourself that I talked about, you need to be confused first about why you're not happy and why and and and you need to be confused about, okay, what what am I doing here? What is my purpose here?" Giovanna shared her own journey of overcoming depression by reprogramming her mindset and focusing on gratitude and service to others. "I was like, 'You know what? I'm going to name my brand confused girl, because it's so authentic. And it was me and and I thought, I want to take the shame out of being confused and, and then that's the premise of my book, that confusion is actually a virtue.'" Walt beautifully summarized the key takeaway, saying "the confusion is we're confused because it's so chaotic, but the chaos is why we came here in the first place, exactly chose this place. I don't know what the hell we were thinking, but we..." This idea that the chaos and confusion of life is actually part of the journey resonates deeply.
